William A. Gianoukos, 83, of Belmont, MA. William "Bill" was born in Boston in April 1927 to Greek immigrant parents. He grew up in the Greek Cathedral church serving as altar boy to then Rev. Koukouzis, later Archbishop Iakovos. He attended Mechanic Arts High School, was an active member of the GOYA and the bowling league, earning multiple trophies and awards. During World War II he served in the United States Navy earning the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theater Medal. After returning from the war, he attended Northeastern University graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He also took Masters courses at M.I.T. while working at the M.I.T Instrumentation Laboratory. He was an active member of the M.I.T. shooting club participating in many competitions including the Massachusetts Pistol Championship earning multiple awards over the years. During his career he published many papers and contributed to the book, "Inertial Component Testing: Philosophy and Methods," Editor W.G. Denhard. He remained at Draper Laboratory until his retirement in 1989. During a very lucky business trip in 1970 to Athens, he met his wife Marina. Following a quick courtship they were married at the Agia Marina church in Athens six months later. They have two children, Arthur and Nicole. He was a dedicated member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Boston where he served as president for two terms. Under his presidency, he purchased the land in Brookline where the Cathedral center and Metropolis center now reside. Following his retirement Bill was able to focus on his hobbies. He was an active hunter traveling to New York every year with "the boys" for a weeklong trip. He also enjoyed fishing during the summer. With his newfound free time, he was able discover a new love, sailing. He took lessons with two of his close friends becoming a certified captain and took to the waves sailing all around the area. He was also able to focus on his love of amateur radio taking to the waves, spending long hours talking to people all over the world sending out his call signal, W1AZH. He was a member of the Massachusetts Freemasons, serving as Master. Throughout it all he was active in the Greek community. In addition to the church, he was a member of AHEPA and the Hellenic Square and Compass Club. He was actively involved with the Arkadian Society of Massachusetts, serving as treasurer and as president for several years. He looked forward to the annual dance where he always found time to get in at least one of two rounds of his favorite dance, Tsamiko. He also served as the first president of the Metropolis of Boston Youth Dance Group for several years. Later on he spent some time traveling in Europe, which he greatly enjoyed. His illness slowly started to take him away but his spirit remained strong. He fought his illness to the end, lasting longer than even his doctors estimated. We are now left with everlasting memories - good times, funny stories, laughs and fun.
