Dr. Triphon P. Vlagopoulos's Obituary

Dr. Triphon Vlagopoulos, of Newton, MA, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2022. Beloved husband of Maria T. (Daoula) Vlagopoulos. Devoted father of Dr. Panagiotis "Pete" Vlagopoulos and his wife Kate, and Dr. Pigi "Penny" Vlagopoulos. Loving Pappou of Elena, Sophia and Evan Vlagopoulos, and Orion Gomez. Loving brother of Panagiota Tsikala and her husband Christos, Daphne Skarlatou and her husband Vasilis, Vasilis Vlagopoulos and his wife Anna, and the late Eleni Kantziou and her late husband Ioannis, all of Glyfada, Greece.

Born in Katokleitoria (Mazaika), Greece to Panagiotis and Amalia Vlagopoulos, he was the oldest of five children. A survivor of WWII and the Greek Civil War, he graduated with a degree in Medicine from the University of Athens, specializing in internal medicine. In 1969, he moved with his wife Maria to the United States, where he completed a second internal medicine residency and received a subspeciality in allergy and immunology. After working at the National Institute of Health in Washington, D.C. for two years, he moved to Massachusetts, where he had a long career as a physician in Cambridge. He built a private practice with Maria and was deeply respected by his colleagues, as well as his devoted patients, who continued to reach out to him well into retirement. Humble and compassionate, he cared for everyone, whether they could pay or not, and never turned a patient away, no matter how late in the day. He represented the essence of what it means to care for others and alleviate their suffering.

He loved to read books about politics and philosophy. Enjoying endless debates with friends and family, his outrage at injustice and inequality continued unabated throughout his life. He was a natural storyteller, and his impassioned stories of the difficult years he spent in wartime and the lean years afterward were foundational for his children in cultivating their sense of an ethical life. His family and friends also knew him for his keen sense of humor. As his mobility became restricted in his later years, he liked to joke that the Spartans were smart to toss people like him off a cliff. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren, whom he viewed as his greatest accomplishment. He will be remembered as a man of integrity with a big heart that had room for everyone.

Triphon is survived by many relatives and friends here and in Greece. Given the difficult circumstances of the global pandemic and the family's concern for family and friends, it is not possible to welcome everyone, so funeral services will be private. Burial will take place in Glyfada, Greece.
