Triantafillos "Phil" Athanasiou, 69, of Norwood MA passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's on March 25th, 2024, surrounded by his beautiful family. He was born in the small coastal village of Komnina, Greece, located in the central region of Greece to the late George and Katerina Athanasiou. He was the youngest of 7 children. As a young man, he loved his family, friends and his favorite soccer team AEK. He met the love of his wife Eleni Pseudoikonomou in 1974 while serving in the Greek army, and they married on January 20th, 1979. They welcomed 2 beautiful children, and made the decision to move to the US in the early 80's, where he set down roots and embarked on the American dream.
He was a devoted father to Katerina Polechronis and her husband Jim Polechronis and George Athanasiou and Liana Papadopoulos-Athanasiou. Loving Pappou of Athena Polechronis, Stamatis Polechronis, Konstantinos Athanasiou, Eleni Polechronis and Stefanos Athanasiou. Brother of Ioannis Athanasiou and his wife Anthi, Miltos Athanasiou and his wife Eugenia, Evangelia Kanetsis, and the late Konstantinos Athanasiou and his wife Eleni, the late Athanasia Athanasiou, and the late Eleni Pagoni. Brother in law of Nikolaos Pseudoikonomou and his wife Sophia, and Lefteris Pseudoikonomou. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, amazing relatives, and friends, both here and in Greece.
Triantafillos(Phil) never missed a soccer or basketball game, and devoted all of his free time to his family. He was an avid Boston Sports fan and loved to cheer on Boston's best! Phil was also a small business owner, who alongside his wife, managed Cappy's II on Huntington Ave for over 25 years. He was a wonderful man whose warmth and love spread to everyone he crossed paths with.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, March 28th, 2024, at St Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church, 39 Belgrade Avenue, Roslindale, MA at 11AM. Visitation prior to the Funeral Service from 9 AM – 11:00 AM at the church. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Nectarios Church.
Burial in The Gardens Cemetery, West Roxbury, MA.
