The Rev. Protopresbyter Stanley N. Markantonis of Belmont, MA was born in New York City on June 12, 1928. He passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass. He was the second of four children of Nicholas Stylianos Markantonis and Vasiliki (Doriforos). He was the brother of Anne M. Conway of New York, NY, George N. Markantonis of Ballwin, MO, and the late Maria N. Markantonis of Rethymno, Crete. The Rev. Stanley Markantonis grew up between New York City and Rethymno, Crete until the beginning of World War II. After the war, he came to New York City with his brother George where he completed high school, and soon after attended the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Brookline, MA, and also was a graduate of Boston University. He was married in 1954 to the late Presbytera Helen Sgouros, daughter of the late Rev. Demetrios and Presbytera Athena Sgouros of Lowell, MA. He leaves his children, Athena M. Halkiotis, Vicky (Vasiliki) S. Markantonis, and Nicholas S. Markantonis and his wife Catherine, and his grandchildren, Elaina, Amanda and Anna Maria Halkiotis, Alexander Sullivan, Stelios, Alessandra and Demetri Markantonis. He also leaves his brothers-in-law, Rev. Alexander D. Sgouros and Adam D. Sgouros, and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He has spanned a lifelong career of over 59 years serving as a priest in the Greek Orthodox Church, and worked in the Greek Consulate in New Orleans in his earlier years. The Rev. Markantonis also served on the board of the Pan Cretan Society of Boston.
