Sofia
Giannakopoulos
January 16, 1932 – June 23, 2024
Sofia Giannakopoulos, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23rd in Westford, Massachusetts. She was 90 years old.
Sofia was born in Agrylos, Greece on November 16th, 1933, the youngest of five children. After a very difficult childhood, she was married to her beloved husband Alexandros in 1961 (whom she was married to for 55 years), and the two of them initially made their living as hard-working, family-oriented farmers. In 1966, she and her family emigrated to Lowell, Massachusetts, where she lived until 2005. Early on, she worked for various employers, but eventually dedicated herself completely to her family, church, and local Greek community. She was known for her immaculate housekeeping, delicious cooking, and her large and fruitful garden. She loved to walk and listen to her husband read to her. Many also remember her sharp wit and huge, loving heart. Later in life, she was defined by her great faith and piety, praying frequently, attending many church services, and reciting countless prayers by heart. She often stopped her daily walks to greet children, give words of comfort to strangers, and offer to pray for them.
Sofia is survived by her daughters Stella (of Westford, MA), Anne (of Marietta, GA), Penny (of Dublin, CA), and son Peter (of Amherst, NH), six grandchildren, and two great grand-children.The wake will be held on Thursday, June 27th, from 5-7 PM at Saint Mark of Ephesus Orthodox Cathedral, 340 Clapboardtree St, Westwood, MA 02090. The funeral will take place on Friday, June 28th at 9AM, at the same location. Donations in Sofia's memory may be made to the aforementioned Saint Mark's church.
