Protopapas, Paul Nicholas WWII Veteran and Professor, Devoted to Family and the Pursuit of Knowledge, Dies at 99
Paul Protopapas of Medford, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2025, at home, surrounded by family. Raised in Boston's West End, Paul graduated from Boston Latin School in 1944, served as a B-29 gunner in the Pacific during World War II, and earned three degrees at Tufts University. He later taught biology at Somerville High School and became a professor at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
Beloved husband of Irene (Mavroidakos) for 59 years. Loving father of Helen Biggart, husband, John of Zurich, CH, James, wife, Sandra of Newburyport and Peter, wife, Lindsay of Irmo, SC. Cherished grandfather of eight, uncle to many nephews and nieces whom he loved dearly.
Visitation prior to the Funeral Service on Saturday, September 6, Holy Cross Chapel, Hellenic College, 50 Goddard Avenue, Brookline. Visitation from 9:00 a.m., followed by Holy Services from 10:00 a.m. Burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, in Medford.
