Pandelis Papaioannou died peacefully on June 10, 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts at the age of 81 surrounded by his family. Pandelis is survived by his wife, Anastasia Papaioannou; his son, Nikolaos Papaioannou, together with his wife Vasiliki Kalaitzidis and their children Pantelis and Elisavet (of Newton), and his son-in law, Matthew DiGregorio and his children Andrianna and Alexander (of Holliston); his sister Eugenia Kalabaka together with her husband Donatos (of Filiates, Greece). He is preceded in death by his daughter, Eugenia DiGregorio (of Holliston), and his brothers Athanasios Papaioannou (of Glens Falls, New York) and Christos Papaioannou (of Lexington, North Carolina). Pandelis Papaioannou was born on April 8, 1937 in Vavouri, Greece to Ioannis and Alexandra Papaioannou and immigrated to the United States in 1956. He married Anastasia Stavrou in Filiates, Greece in 1972. After moving to the United States, the couple welcomed two children into their home. His children remember him as a strong supportive father who encouraged them to be independent, further their education and pursue their life's goals. Pandelis Papaioannou lived an enriched and full life having grown up as an orphan in Hungary, immigrating to the United States at the age of seventeen while supporting his sister and grandmother who traveled with him, building a successful restaurant business and together with his wife creating a loving family. Pandelis was a passionate and intelligent man who was at his happiest when surrounded by family and friends, loud and lively conversation and good tsipouro. He was a devoted husband to his wife Anastasia and an adoring pappou to not only his immediate grandchildren, Pantelis, Andrianna, Alexander and Elisavet, who loved him dearly, but also to all the extended family grandchildren. Visiting hours are scheduled for 5:00-8:00pm on June 12, 2018 at Saint Catherine's Greek Orthodox Church in Braintree, Massachusetts. A funeral is scheduled for 10:00am on June 13, 2018 also at Saint Catherine's in Braintree, Massachusetts. Burial in the Gardens at Gethsemane Cemetery, West Roxbury. All are welcome to attend the makaria (luncheon) to follow at Davio's at 55 Boylston Street, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Saint Catherine's Greek Orthodox Church at 119 Common Street, Braintree, Massachusetts.
