Orestes Theodore Demetriades, of West Yarmouth, MA, Naples, FL, and formerly of Belmont, MA, passed suddenly and peacefully on August 12, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Hloy (Tsoumas) Demetriades, along with his children, Deborah Demetriades Marini and her husband Robert of Naples, FL, their children Thalia and Ianthe, Theodore Demetriades and his wife Deborah of Scituate, MA, their children Alexis Demetriades-Spooner and her husband Ian, and Alece, and Peter Demetriades and Nicole McCay of Sagamore Beach, MA, and Peters children, Thomas and Danielle along with their mother Lisa (Marney) Demetriades. He is survived as well by many nieces, nephews, and cousins in both Greece and the United States. His long and extraordinary life began on a refugee ship off the island of Lesbos, Greece in 1922. He immigrated to the United States in 1951 at the age of 30, establishing residence in Watertown and then Belmont, MA. He was the founder and long-time host of Grecian Echoes, the longest continuously broadcast Greek radio program in the United States, where he proudly promoted and perpetuated Hellenic culture and heritage. He was also a founder of Orbit Travel and other enterprises, contributed poetry to Greek language newspapers, and was a prolific raconteur and speaker. We will miss his engaging presence, his love of life, and his devotion to family.
