Nicholas Mitropoulos's Obituary

The politics of the personal is a concept that Nicholas Mitropoulos instinctively and intimately understood. Connecting with people is the best way to show that you understand and care about them - that their lives and their stories matter. Behind the political theories, targeted campaign ads, and speeches, are real lives and real people, who deserve to be heard.

Mitropoulos, a veteran political operative known for his advisement and support of political giants in Massachusetts, across the country and abroad, died September 1, at the age of 73, surrounded by his family.

Although his political work brought him to many places, from backstage at Democratic National Conventions to the steps of the Acropolis, Mitropoulos truly never left his hometown of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Born in Cambridge, Mitropoulos was the third child of Catherine and Theodore Mitropoulos. After graduating from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, he went on to Boston University, and completed a second B.A. at Oxford University.

Mitropoulos began his political career on the McGovern presidential campaign in 1972. After working on the Carter campaign in 1976, Mitropoulos became the Associate Director of the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he served for five years, until he began a relationship and friendship that would span decades. In 1983, Mitropoulos was recruited by Governor Michael Dukakis to become Director of Personnel, where he brought key cabinet people and staff on board to serve in state government.

During Dukakis' 1988 presidential campaign, Mitropoulos was often referred to as Dukakis' "body-man" - an ever present figure on the campaign trail, traveling alongside Dukakis as his special assistant in his bid for the White House.

Mitropoulos often said that he likely logged upwards of 500,000 miles on the campaign trail, traveling to every corner of the country with the presidential hopeful, from the corn fields in Iowa to national debate stages.

"Mitropoulos has been like a traveling mom. He brings the candidate his bran flakes, tells him when he needs a shave and is generally elected to take long, nighttime fast-walks with Dukakis," the Washington Post described in a story, shortly before election day in 1988.

His friendship with Dukakis, and his fellow colleagues on the campaign staff, remained steadfast up until Mitropoulos' death.

After the campaign, Mitropoulos returned to the Kennedy School, where he spent 9 years as Executive Director of the A. Alfred Taubman Center for State and Local Government. He also served as an unofficial advisor to various Governors and Mayors, across the country, regarding the organization, structure and staffing of their administrations.

He then entered into a career of consulting, where would spend the next decades advising major companies and political leaders, including Boston's Mayor Tom Menino, and Mayor Michelle Wu.

Although he brushed shoulders with the likes of presidents and world leaders, Mitropoulos was just as generous to those without a famous name or well-known career. He was a proud Greek-American, who never forgot his roots.

Mitropoulos leaves behind three children, whom he was incredibly proud of, Alexandra, Theodore, and Arielle; his ex-wife, Nayla; two sisters, Margaret, and her husband, Dennis, and Sophia, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He also leaves many dear friends in Boston, Truro, and Greece.
