Obituary

The world lost a preeminent and world-renowned scientist, scholar, educator, researcher, and Arab nationalist. Mujid Kazimi, the TEPCO Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) died of a heart attack while on a visit to China to participate in an international advisory committee. Professor Kazimi was born in Jerusalem, Palestine in 1947. He would tell others "I am a product of a mixed Arab educational system," and he never lost sight of his Palestinian and Arab roots. He completed his elementary education in Kuwait, his secondary education in Palestine, and his undergraduate program in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Alexandria in Egypt. After graduating with a B.Sc. in 1969, he attended MIT and received an MSc in 1971 and a PhD in 1973; both in nuclear engineering. Professor Kazimi then joined the MIT faculty in 1976 in both the Department of Nuclear Science & Engineering, where he served as Chairman from 1989 to 1997, and in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He stayed at that institution for the remainder of his life. The achievements of Professor Kazimi in his professional field place him in a category of his own. He was one of the most sought after nuclear engineers internationally, and his work garnered him many awards of recognition. The chairman of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at MIT described him in a commemoration issued by MIT's News Office as "one of the world's great nuclear engineers." He added, Kazimi was "one of the world's most distinguished educators and researchers in the field of nuclear technology. His outstanding scientific and engineering achievements are recognized around the world." Professor Kazimi was a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society and of the International Nuclear Energy Academy. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was admitted to the National Academy of Engineering in 2013, which is the highest level that one can achieve in engineering. He also received several professional awards, including the Arab TAKREEM Award for Scientific and Technological Achievement in 2011. In addition to the important technological advances he made to his profession, and the many undergraduate and graduate students he mentored at M.I.T. through the years, he served with boundless energy as a board member of The Association of Arab-American University Graduates (AAUG), the Trans Arab Research Institute (TARI), the M.I.T. Arab Student Organization, and Al-Quds University in Jerusalem. He is survived by his wife, Nazik, daughter Yasmeen, sons Marwan and Omar, and three grandchildren, who will forever remember his gentle heart, uplifting laughter, calm demeanor, and generosity. Religious services will be publicly held on Saturday July 11, 2015 at 10:30 am at the Wayland Islamic Center (126 Boston Post Road, Wayland, Mass). Burial services will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain (95 Forest Hill Ave, Boston, Mass.) at noon. Visitation at the Kazimi family home in Newton, Mass. (16 Manemet Road, Newton) will be held the following day, Sunday July 12, from noon until 5:00 pm. For those who wish, contributions can be made in his honor to The Jerusalem Fund (http://www.thejerusalemfund.org/), to support student scholarships at Al Quds University.
