Mikhail Malyutov 09/21/1941 - 12/16/2019
Professor Mikhail Malyutov unexpectedly passed away on December 16th 2019 in the arms of his beloved wife Eugenia, when his heart stopped due to a sudden severe complication during his medical treatment.
Professor Malyutov was a distinguished mathematician, who worked and taught in the mathematics department of Northeastern University (Boston). His research area spanned applied statistics, information theory, experiment design and a variety of applications. His applied work includes a wide spectrum ranging from DNA fingerprinting, molecular dynamics, and statistical author-attribution to multi-target tracking and financial mathematics. He is best known for his pioneering work on experiment design, information theoretic foundations of group testing, and his earlier works on the solution of the multivariate Poincare boundary value problem and random walks on groups.
Prior to joining Northeastern University, Professor Malyutov taught and conducted research at the Mathematics and Mechanics Dept. of Moscow State University, and Moscow Technical University, and before that he worked as a senior researcher in the Statistical laboratory of Andrei Kolmogorov (who developed the modern mathematical foundations of probability theory).
Professor Malyutov obtained his PhD '67 and ScD '83 degrees from the Moscow State University.
More than 25 students have defended their PhD dissertations under the supervision of Professor Malyutov. He authored over 200 academic papers, and two books, one of them still unfinished. Up until a few days before the tragedy he was still corresponding with his students and actively trying to finish the book.
In addition to his academic work, Mikhail was an accomplished pianist, classically trained singer, and had a keen interest in literary history, including mathematical approaches for authorship attribution for works of William Shakespeare (and other writers). His work appeared in a documentary "Shakespeare against Shakespeare".
Mikhail is survived by his wife Eugenia, three sons, Dmitry, Igor and Boris a daughter Anna, and grand-daughters Vera and Sophia. Memory of Mikhail will forever remain in the hearts of his family, students and friends.
There will be a visitation on Sunday, December 29, 2019 at the funeral home from 2PM to 5PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Funeral Services and burial will be held in Russia.
