MICHAEL C. EGIROUS "CHARLIE THE TECH TAILOR" Michael Charles Egirous, at 91, of Waltham, after a long illness. Michael was born on October 8, 1919 in Boston, Mass, the oldest son of Costas G. and Mary (Dallis) Egirous). As a young boy, the family now with his younger brother George moved to Cambridge and then to Watertown. Michael was a graduate of Watertown High School Class of 1937 where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. He then went on to Boston University while also helping his dad, know as "Charlie the Tech Tailor", at his tailor and dry-cleaning shop on the campus of M.I.T. With World War II about to break out Michael left school for the Army on March 24, 1941. Still in training at Camp Edwards Fort Bragg, NC, on December 7, 1941 he was immediately deployed to Pearl Harbor and the Pacific. Serving in the Americal Division, 121 st Medical Brigade he spent the next 3 1/2 years in New Calendonia, Guadalcanal, The Fiji Islands, Bougainville, Leyte, Cebu City and the Southern Philippines. Staff Sergeant Egirous was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters for Military operations under heavy shelling and fire by the enemy on Bougainville, Solomon Islands, March, 1944. He was also the recipient of The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 Battle Stars, The Philippine Liberation Medal, The Sharpshooter Rifle Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation. He returned stateside on July 1, 1945 and married Irene Zografos of Waltham on July 22, 1945. He took over for his then ailing dad and also became known as "Charlie the Tech Tailor". Moving to Waltham in 1949 he was made an honorary Alumnus of M.I.T. in June of 1988. He jokingly would say his degree was a "CPA" - Cleaning, Pressing and Alterations. Selling his business and retiring in 1991 the "Charlie the Tech Tailor" sign was placed in the M.I.T. Museum which was a proud honor for him and tribute to his late dad. Michael was a Shriner and a member of the Greek Orthodox Church Taxiarchae of Watertown, where he was a former Sunday School Director, choir member and Godparent of the choir. He was an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed attending his grandsons' football games. Married 58 years his wife Irene passed away in April, 2003 and until the onset of his illness in 2007 dedicated his time to volunteering at his church, to the Shriners and to a children's reading program at Tufts University. He was also a member of the Bosox Club. He leaves one son, Charles M. Egirous and his wife Catherine of Waltham, ; two grandsons, Michael Egirous and his wife Tobi and Nicholas and his wife Melissa all of Waltham and three great-grandchildren; Cameron, Olivia and Lucy. He also leaves his brother George Egirous and his niece Maria Egirous-Robinson and her husband Darren. Funeral from the Faggas Funeral Home,551 Mt. Auburn St.,Watertown, MA on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 9 am followed by services in the Greek Orthodox Church Taxiarchae, 25 Bigelow Ave.,Watertown, MA at 10am. Visiting hours on Wednesday from 4 to 8pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the above named church choir. Late Veteran US Army, WWII.
