Mary (Sarandis) Machakos, age 87, passed away peacefully on October 5. For over 48 years she was the beloved and devoted wife of Costandine (John) of Dedham. Mary was the daughter of Theodore Sarandis and Helen Pappastatis Sarandis of Greece. She was predeceased by her parents and her sister-in-law, Mary Sarandis. Mary is survived by her dear brother, George Sarandis of Winchester. She will also be greatly missed by her ten loving nephews and nieces and her many grand nieces and nephews. Raised in Brookline and a graduate of Brookline High School, Mary received both her B.S. Ed. and M. Ed. from Boston University. She taught business subjects at Newton North High School for over 30 years until her retirement. Mary was a true patron of the arts with a concentration in Asian art. A deeply religious woman, Mary enjoyed history, mythology, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and museums. She was an avid reader and NY Times Crossword Puzzle devotee. Mary and John created many beautiful memories from their travels together. She volunteered and served on the Executive Board of the Hellenic Nursing Home where she spent her final days. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 13 at 11:00 AM at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 514 Parker Street, Boston, MA 02120. Visitation prior to Service from 10 to 11AM. In lieu of flowers, a charitable contribution may be made to Hellenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 601 Sherman Street, Canton, MA 02021.
