Mary
Christopher
July 21, 1932 – February 7, 2021
Mary Christopher, 88, of Watertown, passed away on February 7th, 2021. She was born in Cambridge and was the daughter of the late George and Helen (Eleni Stephanou) Christopher.
She attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Boston University with a major in History. Following graduation Mary stayed on at BU to work at the Veterans Center which at the time was administering benefits to veterans who had served in the military. Subsequently, when the Center closed, she continued a successful career at the Harvard University, School of Public Health, Department of Physiology as a Senior Administrator and from which she retired.
Mary had many interests, among them her family, friends, travelling and the arts – dance, music, and museums. For four weeks every summer, for nearly 50 years, she traveled abroad, to Europe, the Far East, Israel and Egypt, Haiti and Jamaica, Southeast Asia and Antarctica. Each country she visited was her favorite!
She loved reading the New Yorker and generally was an avid reader of fiction and non-fiction. For several years she took part in a writing class at Harvard and showed her ability and talent to write engaging narratives, mostly about her relatives.
Mary enjoyed Spanish dancing and took up dance classes. Mary was also a yoga enthusiast since the Seventies, participating in a variety of classes. Along with this healthy habit, she was equally attentive to her dietary health and very particular about the natural foods that she bought and cooked.
Mary had a wicked sense of humor which delighted her many friends. She was outgoing and always available to meet with them and have a good time.
Mary is survived by her brother, Christopher G. Christopher of Spotswood, NJ, and her sisters Irene Christopher of Newton and Stella Papadakis of Wyomissing, PA, eight nephews and nieces, 13 great nieces and nephews and one great-great nephew.
Funeral services will be held at Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Avenue, Watertown, MA on February 26, 2021 at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery. A memorial service will be held later in the year.
Mary supported many charitable organizations up to her final years. Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Street Inn or the Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church or to Pine Street Inn: Ending Homelessness, 444 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA 02118.
