Obituary

Mary C. (Triantafilou) Barbas, of Woburn, Massachusetts, peacefully fell asleep in the Lord on January 10, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was the daughter of the late Charles and Edith Margarita (Carveth) Triantafilou. She was married to her beloved husband of 57 years John S. Barbas, who fell asleep in the Lord on November 2, 2012. Devoted father of Steven J. Barbas and his wife Belinda, Charles J. Barbas and his wife Sheila, William J. Barbas and his wife Karyl, Gail J. Barbas, Edith Mantsavinos and her husband Charles, and Father Theodore J. Barbas and his wife Daphne. Loving Yiayia to her adoring grandchildren: Louie and his wife Dana, Johnny, Marina, Cliff, Mary, Jackie, Christopher, Yianni, Megan, Cassandra, Eric, Maria, Katerina, Yianni, and Thea. Proud great-grandmother of little London May. Sister of Presbytera Helen and the Rev. Anastasios Coulouras, the Rev. Nicholas C. and Presbytera Diane Triantafilou, and the late Thespina Trearchis. Sister-in-law of Patricia Barbas, Janet Barbas, and the late Nicholas Barbas, and the late George Trearchis. Mary is also survived by many nieces, nephews, godchildren, relatives and friends. To her 16 grandchildren, Yiayia Mary was the world and her example of love and faith and family will live on through them. Mary loved her family, Church, and all others who were in need or who simply came into her presence. She lived in Woburn her entire life, graduating with honors from Woburn High School in 1949 with her high school sweetheart, Johnny Barbas. Mary played the mandolin in her high school orchestra, played on the basketball team, and served as editor in chief of the yearbook. She also organized all of her Class of 49 high school reunions. Mary was a lifelong steward of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church of Woburn participating in ALL of the parish's ministries. Mary had a special love for philanthropic outreach through the Philoptochos Society "Patris"--actively serving as the president, secretary and treasurer over many years. In addition to the Ladies Philoptochos Society, Mary was an active member of the church choir joining when she was just 13 and singing praises to God into her 80s. For many years, Mary served on the Philoptochos Metropolis (Diocese) Board. She was also active locally in the "Church Women United" of Woburn, and the "Dwelling Place" which serves meals to the less fortunate in Woburn. Mary has touched the lives of many people with her loving heart, beautiful smile, faithful life, and generous soul.
