Marion J. Avtges's Obituary

Marion J. (Moskos) Avtges of Watertown , MA passed away peacefully on August 2, 2022. Beloved wife of Nicholas E. Avtges. Devoted Mother of Suzanne M. Avtges and her husband Robert R. Plourde, Nicholas E. Avtges , Jr. and his wife Kathleen and Christopher J. Avtges and his wife Tabetha and the late Michael E. Avtges. Loving grandmother of Nicholas E. Avtges, III and Sydney E. Avtges, Thomas C. Avtges and Hunter M. Avtges. Loving sister of Priscilla J. Moskos. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Marion was a loving wife, mother, yiayia, sister, auntie, cousin, and friend.  She was strong, resilient, faithful, smart, funny and compassionate.

She met the love of her life at a family Christmas party and a year later she asked Nick "when are we getting married?"  Their family started and still remains in a small ranch in Watertown, raising a daughter and 3 sons. Marion loved her four grandchildren - the ones who called her Yiayia.

Marion was given more challenges in life than anyone should have.  First surviving bladder cancer as a young girl then losing her son Michael at the age of 26 to leukemia  She faced her own battles with two types of breast cancer, a bilateral mastectomy, and finally struggling with Parkinson's disease and dementia to which her weakened body eventually succumbed.  Through all of these challenges she never lost her faith in God.

Aside from her children and grandchildren her most memorable legacy began in the summer of 1999. Marion volunteered as a Parish Nurse in the Taxiarchae/Archangels Community.  With the blessings of Metropolitan Methodios and Father Theodore J. Barbas, Presbyter, Marion developed the Parish Nurse Ministry at the Taxiarchae/Archangels Church in Watertown, MA. Marion earned her Nursing degree from Faulkner Hospital as well as a BA in Psychology and Education from Emmanuel College. She completed the Parish Nursing Certification program at Boston College. This ministry not only served members of the Taxiarchae Church and Orthodox faithful but also members of other faiths in the Watertown area. Marion was the first Parish Nurse of the Orthodox faith in North America.

Marion fell asleep with the Lord peacefully with her beloved husband Nicholas holding her hand while he sang a gentle lullaby to her.
