Maria A. Bandouveres, dedicated more than 81 years to federal service, becoming the longest-serving civil servant in U.S. history and a cornerstone here since World War II.

Bandouveres died peacefully Sept. 5 at the age of 98.

"Maria is remembered not just for her longevity, but for her kindness, precision, and ability to make everyone feel seen," said Mr. Jeremy Thiele, deputy program executive officer for Cyber and Networks.

Her passing concludes a remarkable life of service that spanned more than eight decades.

From her first day as a clerk-typist in 1944 to her final months as executive assistant to the program executive officer for Cyber and Networks, Bandouveres remained a steadfast presence at Hanscom AFB.

"Throughout her career she has worn many hats, that as a leader and a mentor to many," said retired Maj. Gen. Anthony Genatempo, former program executive officer for Cyber and Networks at Bandouveres 80-year federal service anniversary. "Her most important role has been a guardian of our ideals through time. With every decision made and mission undertaken, she has embodied the core values of our Air Force."

Earlier this year, base officials held a ceremony to honor Bandouveres' 81 years of service by renaming building 1606 –where she spent much of her career – as the Maria A. Bandouveres Building.

"Maria's career predated and then spanned the entire history of our United States Air Force, and her contributions have left an indelible mark on our mission, our people, and our legacy," said Genatempo at Bandouveres 80-year anniversary.

The building will stand not only as a center of innovation but as a living tribute to a woman whose career predated the founding of the U.S. Air Force itself.

Her career was marked by accolades from the highest levels of government, including recognition from U.S. Senators, Massachusetts governors and Air Force chiefs of staff. In 2024, she received the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal and was honored for her 80-year milestone.

Maria was the daughter of the late Apostolos and Constantina (Sofronas) Bandouveres.  She was predeceased by her siblings, George Bandouveres, Peter Bandouveres and James Bandouveres.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A wake will be held  on Friday, Sept. 19, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Faggas Funeral Home, 551 Mt Auburn Street, Watertown, MA. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday  Sept. 20, at 10 a.m., at the Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Avenue, Watertown, MA.

Burial immediately following the funeral service at Cambridge Cemetery, Coolidge Hill Road, Cambridge, MA.
