Marcia Jacob's Obituary

Marcia Schuyler Wickes Jacob, February 16, 1928 - February 7, 2023

Marcia Jacob was a strong and independent woman, who loved the outdoors and family.  Days shy of her 95 th birthday, she died peacefully in the company of her three daughters, Judy, Wendy, and Lucy.

The youngest child of Philip and Hilda Crain Wickes, Marcia grew up with her brothers, Bob and Tom, on the family's farm in Ontario, New York.  As a child, she loved playing with her pet lamb, Clementine, and riding her pony, Billy.  She spent her summers as a teenager at Northway Lodge, a canoe camp in Algonquin Park, Canada.

Marcia graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1949, with a BA in Psychology.  She taught elementary school in Rochester and Honolulu, where she was an active member of the Hawaiian Trails and Mountain Club.

Marcia married Carlyle William Jacob, a physicist and engineer, in 1954.  They raised their daughters in Quincy, Massachusetts, and hosted numerous foreign exchange students over the years.  The family spent many happy summers at the Wickes' camp on Lake Ontario, where they played host to numerous cousins and other relatives.  Marcia and Carl enjoyed thirty-one years of marriage until Carl's death in 1985.

Marcia worked for Brown Brothers Harriman and Welch & Forbes, wealth management firms, from 1974 to 2002.  Commuting into Boston for work, she regularly attended lunchtime recitals at King's Chapel.  She also participated for ten years in the Women's Health Initiative, the first national longitudinal study of women's health in America.

Hunting for mushrooms was one of Marcia's passions.  She was a member of the Boston Mycological Club and served as the club's corresponding secretary for thirty-five years.  She organized countless forays and shared her enthusiasm for mushroom collecting with her children and grandchildren.  Marcia also enjoyed attending concerts of Baroque and early music, exploring museums, hosting grand Thanksgiving dinners, and making Christmas fruitcakes to send to family and friends.

In 2014, Marcia moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. Her home overlooked the Charles River, where she enjoyed her view of boats, ducks, snowstorms, spring flowers on the banks, and her granddaughter's crew team practicing.

Marcia is survived by her daughters Judy Jacob of Brooklyn, NY; Wendy Jacob of Cambridge, MA; Lucy Jacob (Kirk Nichols) of Salt Lake City, UT; and her grandchildren, Nels (Jess) Nichols, Sara Nichols, and Alice Jacob.

A memorial in her honor will be held this June in Cambridge.
