Obituary

Louis T. Kostas was born on December 6, 1922 in Cambridge, Mass. He was the son of Anastasios and Demetra (Maniatis) Kostopoulos. He was raised in Cambridge, Mass and attended Cambridge Public Schools. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the US Navy. He served on the USS Bunker Hill in the Asiatic, Pacific, Guam, Tinian and Saipan. The USS Bunker Hill was the first aircraft carrier to be torpedoed by the Kamakazis near the end of WWII. Louis was in the Zenith "crows nest" when the bombs were landing on the flight deck. More than 300 fellow shipmates perished. Robert Maxwell Kennedy wrote a book about this attack. In 1949 he was awarded a presidential unit citation for extraordinary heroism displayed by the crew of the USS Bunker Hill in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Pacific War Area. After his discharge from WWII he returned to Cambridge, Mass. He worked at the Revere Sugar Refinery until his retirement. He was predeceased by his parents, Anastasios and Demetra Kostopoulos , his siblings, Betty Kostopoulos Gelowtsky and her late husband Victor and James E. Kostas. He is survived by his niece, Nancy Gelowtsky Miller and her husband David and James R. Kostas and his late wide Judith. He is also survived by many dear cousins. His funeral service was held on Friday, Janaury 11, 2013 at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Cambridge. He was buried in the family plot at Mt. Auburn Cemetery.
