Kevin Roger
Donohue
May 6, 1942 – May 19, 2023
Kevin Roger Donohue, age 81, of Dennis Port, Massachusetts, passed away on May 19, 2023. Kevin was born on May 6, 1942, in Buffalo, New York, to Edwin Stephen Donohue, a firefighter, and Gladys (Reid) Donohue, who worked as a telephone operator after Edwin's untimely death made her a young widow with six school-aged children. He earned an A.A.S. in mechanical engineering from Erie County Technical Institute in Buffalo, and a B.S. in industrial management from Rochester Institute of Technology.
Kevin enjoyed a long and successful career in the photographic industry, working for Eastman Kodak from the early 1960s to the early 90s, living in Rochester, New York, Sacramento, California, Stuttgart, Germany, and London, England, along the way. He then held executive roles at Qualex in Boston and Durham, N.C., and Fujicolor Processing in Elmsford, N.Y., capping his career as President and CEO of Digital Portal in Grand Prairie, Texas.
Throughout his life, Kevin enjoyed sailing, horse racing, travel, following his beloved Buffalo Bills, and most of all, telling stories. A certified Yachtmaster, he owned sailboats that he piloted in The Solent, England, Pamlico Sound, N.C., and Nantucket Sound. He crewed renowned races including the Fastnet and Newport to Bermuda. At age 55, he spent three weeks helping bring a 62' sailboat across the Atlantic Ocean, a journey he described as, "22 days and 20 hours of sheer bliss, and four hours of sheer terror!"
A consummate storyteller, Kevin could often be found sharing tales of his colorful childhood in working-class Buffalo, the only Irish family in a neighborhood of Italians. His future as a successful businessman was apparent as he maximized his paper route's profit by recruiting dozens of kids to deliver the papers—while he collected the payments. He often told his stories with a large gin and tonic in hand, his family hearing them again, and again, and again.
Kevin loved sports. A beleaguered but loyal lifelong Buffalo Bills fan, he was a season ticket holder who attended all of their Super Bowl games. He especially loved a day betting the ponies, whether it be the Kentucky Derby, the Belmont Stakes or the Cheltenham Racing Festival, where he enjoyed an annual "boys' trip" for many years.
Among the wisdom he shared with his loved ones was to always bring a hostess gift, dine where the locals do when traveling, how to trim a sail and handicap a horse race, and to never, ever give up hope that the Bills will one day win the Super Bowl. Kevin's bright energy filled a room, and he made fast friends with billionaires and tradesmen alike. "Papa D" and "Gabba" to his beloved grandchildren, his love for family, travel and life in general will be missed by all.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Martine Donohue and their daughter Claire Donohue, his daughter Gwyn Donohue, his son Brad (Tanya) Donohue, grandchildren Hannah and Hailey Donohue and Oscar and Amelie Donohue-Reidy, and sister Gail Donohue, as well as five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Mary Ellen Donohue, Geraldine Downs, Maureen Straw Johnson, and Edwin Donohue, and four nieces and nephews.
Per his wishes, Kevin's ashes were spread at sea, in the Atlantic Ocean off Chatham, Mass., with a bagpipe tribute. A reception followed at his favorite local watering hole, Jack's Club 28 in Dennis Port.
