Katherine Pappas' Obituary

Katherine ''Kathy'' (Morakis) Pappas, of Framingham and Sanibel,FL, wife of Constantine ''Gus'' Pappas, died on Thursday, July 14, following a courageous five-year battle with cancer. The widow of the late Evangelos ''Lou'' Stamoulis, she was 65.
A devout Orthodox Christian and Pan-Orthodox activist, she was a founding member of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Worcester and the Greek Orthodox American Leaders (GOAL), which has worked in favor of a united Orthodox Church in America.
Born in Cambridge on August 11, 1939, she was the daughter of Anthony and Netsa (Pannani Pappaioannou) Morakis. An early affliction with polio never slowed her down. Despite many operations and long hospital stays, her devotion to her faith and her Hellenic ancestry found her in the center of life at the Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Cambridge, where she was organist, in Central Square's Greek Immigrant community.
She was a past Grand President of the Maids of Athena, as well as the winner of the 1960 Ahepa National Convention Queen contest.
Mrs. Pappas attended Cambridge Public Schools and graduated from Brighton High School and LaSalle College.
In May, 1962, she and Lou Stamoulis married, raising their three children in Natick, where the family lived until his death in January, 1989. An active member of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Weston for over 30 years, she was a longtime member of the choir and served also as an organist, Junior GOYA Advisor and chaired the 1986 and 2000 festivals and several dances.
Since her retirement and marriage to Gus Pappas in 1996, she spent most of the year in the Ft. Myers, Florida area. There she became active in the Annnciation Greek Orthodox Church, where she also served as an organist, worked the yearly church festival adn co-chaired a major fundraising auction/dance in 2004.
Mrs. Pappas was also a member and supporter of St. Michael's Orthodox Church in Cotuit and St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Chruch in Shrewsbury. Her strength of spirit and committed involvement in many church communities found her in the center of a legion of fellow Orthodox Christians and friends with whom she regularly shared news of the Orthodox Church, uplifting spiritual material and some very colorful ethnic and political jokes via an email network that she maintained right up until her final weeks.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Lea (Stamoulis)and James Christo of Worcester, two sons and daughters-in-law, Evan and Valerie Stamoulis of Northborough and Paul and Karen Stamoulis of Darien,Ct: two brothers and sisters-in-law,John and Demetra Morakis of Waltham and James and Betty Morakis of New York City.
