Dr. Katherine Ballis of Boston passed away peacefully on April 9, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. She was born January 31, 1953 in Rhodes Greece, emigrating with her parents to the US on October 31, 1965. She graduated from New London High School in 1970, continued her education at Mitchell College in New London and received her B.A. in Chemistry Cum Laude at Connecticut College in 1976. She went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania to obtain her medical degree in 1980. Katherine completed her residency and fellowship in radiology at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston, Ma. She was a partner at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates for over 25 years in Boston. She is survived by her husband Vassilios Spirounis, her son Gary Seitis from New London and her daughter Sophia Spirounis of Boston. She is also survived by her four sisters Felia, Vassiliki, and Barbara Ballis and Maria Longinidis, of Waterford, Ct, and several nieces and nephews: Stacy and Niko Delatolas, Stephanie Eoanou, and Yianni and Nina Longinidis. She was predeceased by her parents Efstathios and Efstratia Ballis and her sister Eleni Ballis. Katherine Ballis came to the United States speaking no English. Overcoming all language barriers, she became an accomplished physician, highly valued by colleagues and patients alike. She was also passionate about her family, claiming the role of matriarch unselfishly. She enjoyed all aspects of life including gourmet cooking, knitting and photography. She found extreme joy in helping her sisters realize a lifelong dream in opening the Caffe NV in Waterford, CT. Katherine was also extremely well versed in Greek history. She was generous to all in her life. Katherine was an exceptional mother, wife, sister, aunt, friend, colleague and physician. Calling hours are on Thursday, April 11th from 5 to 8 pm at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London, CT 06340. The funeral will be held at the Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Ave., Watertown, MA on Friday, April 12th at 1pm. A brief visitation will be held in the church from 12:30 to 1pm.
