Justine G. (Martin)Hench,88,of Mashpee formerly of Lexington died at home on May 22, 2004. She was the daughter of the late Attorney Richard J. Martin and Alice Yorke Martin. She was educated in Boston Schools and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1939. She completed an internship in Clinical Nutrition at the Frances Stern Food Clinic, New England Medical Center and became a Registered Clinical Dietitian earning membership in the American Dietetic Association.
Based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Hench travelled all over the United States as a Service Representative for General Foods. She organized and taught the Red Cross program on Nutrition and Canteen Service for the entire Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania, a war-preparedness community service. During World War II, she became a Food Commodity Specialist with the Office of Price Administration in Washington, D.C.
For the next two decades, Mrs. Hench remained at home in Lexington, Mass. to raise a family with her husband, William Lee Hench. During her many years in Lexington, Mrs. Hench became a charter member of Pilgrim Congregational Church, serving as the first electecd President of the Women's Association and teaching Sunday school. She also served as an officer in PTA's at Fiske and Diamond Junior High Schools, led several Brownie and Girl Scout troops, and helped launch an evening study group at Hancock Church.
Mrs. Hench returned to work when requested to teach nutrition to student nurses at several medical facilites in the Boston area. Later as the head dietitian at Emerson Hospital in Concord, she established clinical and teaching programs. She was responsible for creating strong therapeutic diet protocol at Cambridge City Hospital and at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis while also developing community outreach programs in nutrition.
Mrs. Hench retired in 1978 to spend time with her family and to travel. She became an active member of the Acton Center Congregational CHurch and the Acton Women's Club.
After Moving to Cape Cod in 1997 to live with her daughter, Penelope and her son-in-law Raymond and her granddaughter Justine Lambright, she became a member of the Mashpee Women's Club and frequently volunteered at the Mashpee Senior Center and falmouth Hospital. She is survived by her daughters: Constance Loarie of Atherton, CA, Holly Hench of Concord, MA and Penelope Lambright of Mashpee, MA, Five Granddaughters and one Grandson.
A Memorial Service will be held at Acton Congregational Church, 12 Concord Rd., Acton, MA 01720 on Friday, May 28th at 11am
