Dr. Joseph (Joe) Anthony Phillips passed away peacefully on January 21, 2021, surrounded by his family at his home in Medford, Massachusetts. He was 44.
He was born in Wilmington, DE on October 14, 1976, the son of Bruce and Lynn Phillips.
Joe attended the University of Delaware where he majored in physics and met his college sweetheart, Angela Hadjipanayis. After graduating from the University of Delaware, he completed his graduate studies and earned his Ph.D. in mathematical physics at the University of Maryland in 2004. He went on to complete postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Florida and Harvard Medical School. He began his career in Brighton, MA, with a small biomedical company, IQUUM, that was later acquired by Roche Pharmaceuticals. He was a beloved employee at Roche and contributed to a number of projects during his time there.
Joe was a lover of animation and known for his humorous nature and magic card game playing. He enjoyed camping with friends and traveling internationally with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Angela Hadjipanayis, and their two children Paris and George Phillips. Joe is also survived by his parents, Bruce and Lynn, and siblings Bruce, Nicholas, and Stacey, their spouses and their children.
Funeral Services will be held at the Saint Athanasius Greek Orthodox Church, 4 Appleton Street, Arlington, MA on Thursday, January 28th at 9:30 am for viewing and 10 am for the church service. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Due to the current pandemic, CDC guidelines are to be followed. Burial will be followed in The Gardens of Gethsemane, 670 Baker Street, West Roxbury MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation ( www.sbtf.org ) and StacheStrong ( www.stachestrong.org ) in order to fund important research for glioblastoma.
