Jonathan C Matthews's Obituary

Jonathan C. Matthews, 40, of Watertown, MA passed away unexpectedly on November 24, 2024. Jonathan was born in Newton, Massachusetts. He was the devoted son of Diana Matthews and the late Chester Matthews. Grandson of the late Olga and the late Jubran Ajalat. Loving brother of Nicholas J. Matthews and his wife Molly, and David S. Matthews and his wife Angela. Cherished uncle of Payton, Steven and Emma Rose Matthews and Zoe and Anna Matthews. Nephew of Farris Ajalat, Janet Danish and her husband Raymond, late Peter Ajalat and his wife Theresa, Nancy Chomo and her late husband Steven, Diane Minelli and her husband Domenic, Thomas Matthews and his late wife Mary, late Dorothy Adams and her late husband Lambi.  He is also survived by many cousins including Elizabeth Ajalat, Julie Kefi and her husband Walid and their children Zakariya and Ramzi, Kimberly Danish, Nicole Danish, Stephanie Danish, Sarande Chomo, Nicole McMahon and her husband Kristofor, Carole Adams Doody, Lisa Adams, Eleanor Adams, Richard Adams and wife Lisa, Chris Adams, Trish Matthews Di Tunno and Husband Steven, Sarah Matthews Casanova and husband Justin and many more Matthews cousins, and his extended family, Rita Scordamalgia and her husband John Granahan, Mark Scordamalgia and his wife Kristina and Andrew Scordamalgia.

Jonathan's love for his family was unconditional. He was especially a fan favorite when it came to his nieces and nephew. No one compared to Uncle John, otherwise known as Dodo, Uncle Dolphin or Uncle Penguin. In return, his love for them was unmeasurable. You could see the joy that spending time with any one of them brought him. He especially liked when all five of them were together and he could pick on all of them just as much as they picked on him. He played a game with them when they were younger called "whose the baby", not realizing this would become one of their favorite games. They asked to play it whenever he was around, even when they got too big.
He lived with his brother David, wife Angela and their three children Payton, Steven and Emma Rose.  They all spent most of their time together, whether at dinner, having "big breakfast" on Sundays, eating "dunch" or family game nights, where Monopoly was very intense. Since he lived downstairs, Payton, SJ and Rosie would fight about who would call him up for dinner. It usually resulted in each one of them taking a turn shouting downstairs "IF ANYONE CARES TO EAT!" And anytime he came home, he and SJ had a joke where they would say "Who are you and why are you here?" SJ especially loved shooting the basketball around with his Uncle Dodo. Dave and John spent their Sundays watching the Patriots game and trashing on other teams, especially the Jets and the Cowboys. But whatever they were doing, they all loved being together. John also enjoyed spending time with his "extended family" at Rita's. He would join them often for Sunday dinners, poker night, birthdays, and Easter and Christmas Day.

John often traveled to Arizona to spend time with his mother and brother Nick, sister-in-law Molly who he called "Sil" and their children Zoe and Anna. They would have fun swimming in the pool, enjoying a meal together, or just hanging out. It never really mattered what they were doing, as long as they were together. He also spent time with them when they would make their yearly visit to Boston. This visit was always the most memorable because he got to spend most of his time with his nephew and nieces together.  Zoe and Anna especially loved when Uncle Dolphin would swim with them in the ocean. The beach was one of their favorite places to be with him. Since he only got to see them a few times a year he made sure to spend as much quality time together as possible.

Jonathan's relationship with each of his cousins was also special. From the time they were young and as they grew up, they were always close. Spending nights watching sports, playing Mario Kart or Rock Band, or just ragging on each other, they always loved being together. Cousin nights were always his favorite because they were all together (so it made it easier for him to pick on them). John was always there for a good laugh or to help with anything that was asked. It never mattered what you needed; he would be right by your side.
Jonathan was a best friend to everyone he has ever known. His heart was larger than life. He was always a ray of light and had a smile on his face. His spirit was so positive that it made it hard to be anything but happy when you were around him. A bright light has faded and he will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Although we are saddened at the loss of such an amazing person, he has joined many wonderful family and friends; and even though he is with them, his spirit will continue to be with each and every person he has ever touched.
