John James
Merianos, Phd
February 12, 1937 – June 7, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. John J. Merianos, a pioneering chemist, inventor, loving father and Pappou.
Born into poverty in war-torn Greece, he was one of five children of Eleni and Demetri Merianos of Krokees, and immigrated to the US as a student in the 1950s with the help of his Uncle Constantine (Dean) to pursue higher education. He arrived in Boston, Massachusetts with the clothes on his back and a Greek-English dictionary in his pocket. Dr. Merianos was awarded a scholarship to attend the New England College of Pharmacy, now part of Northeastern University, where he graduated valedictorian. He went on to earn his M.S. and Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he became a loyal Badgers football fan.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Merianos held senior research and leadership roles at FMC Corporation, Millmaster Onyx, GAF Chemical Corporation, and International Specialty Products. He was widely recognized for his groundbreaking work in developing novel antimicrobials and preservatives. Among his most enduring contributions is the invention of Polyquaternium-1 (Polyquad), a quaternary ammonium compound now widely used in cosmetics and ophthalmic solutions globally.
Dr. Merianos was the named inventor on more than 100 U.S. patents, and his innovations have shaped the fields of industrial microbiology, cosmetic preservation, and pharmaceutical formulation. He contributed a chapter on quaternary ammonium compounds to the standard reference work Disinfection, Sterilization, and Preservation, and was honored with the Microbiologist of the Year Award by the Society for Industrial Microbiology in 1997. In 2007, he was honored with the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy's Lifetime Achievement Award, a testament to the breadth and impact of his work.
Dr. Merianos and his wife raised three children, whom he educated at an early age to speak Greek, serve God, and understand the difference between protons, neutrons and electrons. They also fostered four children over the years from Saint Basil Academy in Garrison, NY. In addition to his immediate family, Dr. Merianos is survived by his older brother and sister-in-law, his four grandchildren, and by a large and loving extended family in North America and Greece.
