Joan (Mastorakis) Moutafis - In the early morning of Monday February 12, 2018, Joan passed away peacefully in her sleep. Joan was born in Vandergrift Pennsylvania in 1936. She was the daughter of the late George Mastorakis and Maranthe (Voudouris) Mastorakis. Growing up in a small steel town was challenging during the Great Depression and WWII. Although they had very little, Joan had many friends. It was a small tightly knit community of Greek immigrants that made it a special place to growup. After graduating high school, Joan moved to Washington ,DC to live and work closer to her brother. Although she enjoyed her time in Washington, she eventually chose to move back to Vandergrift to take care of her father. It was fate that brought her husband to be, George Moutafis, to Vandergrift. George was visiting cousins and was introduced to Joan. Joan and George were married in 1958 and settled in the Boston area. Together they started a dry cleaning business (Andy's Cleaners). Joan did the book keeping and accounting for the business, while maintaining another full time job. Joan eventually became a mother of four boys. She technically became a "stay at home mom", but she was much more. She managed the household, managed the accounts of the family business, and raised four boys. She was involved with the PTO, Cub Scouts, and a countless number of sports related activities, games and practices. Joan eventually rejoined the workforce as a call center receptionist for Arthur D. Little in Cambridge Massachusetts. She worked at ADL for many years and eventually retired. In early retirement Joan and George traveled the eastern USA. They enjoyed staying in Florida during the winter months. They made several trips to Greece staying with family and visiting the sites. When not traveling, Joan enjoyed tending to her rose garden, doing needlepoint, and she loved her dog Minnie. Joan was an active steward of Taxiarchae/Archangels Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown MA. She was also a member of the Philoptochos where she volunteered her time and talent. Joan is predeceased by her husband George Moutafis , her brother Stamos Mastorakis, her sisters Katherine (Mastorakis) Savakis and Nickie Mastorakis, her brother-in-law Jerry Savakis, and her son Alexander Moutafis.
