James Caralis, aged 85, of Mendon, MA, formerly of Newton, MA, passed away on July 16, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Stemnitsa, Greece, he was the son of the late Argyrios and Ekaterini Caralis.

In 1955, at the age of 13, James immigrated to America with his father and sister, Stella. His mother and the rest of the family followed two years later, seeking a brighter future. James began his career at Jimmy's Harborside as a cook and later returned to Greece to marry his beloved Irene (Koniaris). The couple settled in Dorchester, MA, then moved to Jamaica Plain before making Newton their home, where they raised their sons, Peter and Aris. After James and Irene retired they moved to Mendon, MA.

James devoted himself to the restaurant business, working at Jimmy's Harborside restaurant in Boston, MA, then went on to own Mitchells Bakery in Jamaica Plain. After selling the bakery, James co-owned Wilson’s Diner in Waltham, MA, and finally owning The Arcadia Restaurant in Waltham, MA for 20 years until his retirement. Aside from his passion for cooking, he enjoyed gardening and visiting Greece to reconnect with family and friends.

A devout Orthodox Christian, James cherished Greek music and his faith community. His joy was amplified when spending time with his grandson, Dimitrios. James’s warmth and dedication to his family and heritage will be fondly remembered.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene; his sons, Peter and Aris; and grandson, Dimitrios. He also leaves behind his siblings, Stella Bloom, Andonia Burland and her husband Dean, Anastos Karalis and John Karalis with his wife Debbie; brother in law Christos Koniaris as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, relatives and friends in both the United States and Greece.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 11 AM at St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 15 Union Park St, Boston, MA, with visitation starting at 10 AM. Burial will follow at Newton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.
