Irene
Martinos
August 4, 1930 – August 5, 2024
Irene (Lyra)Martinos passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024, one day after her 94th birthday. The daughter of Captain Markos Lyras and mother Moshoula, Irene was born in Oinousses, Greece and was later raised in Pasalimani ,Piraeus along with her late siblings Sozen and Maria. She married the love of her life, Martin Martinos (d. 2014), and raised three children; Lillian (husband Paul Nikolaidis) and Mark (wife Carol), and Dimitrios (wife Diane), in Belmont, MA. They were blessed with six grandchildren; Miranda (husband Glen), Mark Jr., Dimitrios Jr., Alex (wife Alison), Alex M and Irini, and two great granddaughters, Isla and Elena. She is also survived by a loving extended family in Greece and the United States.
In her late 20's, Irene left Greece to visit family in New York and Boston, where she met and fell in love with Martin, marrying on June 12, 1960. After fighting breast cancer in 1974, Irene dedicated her life outside of her family to helping others fighting cancer, working tirelessly in hospitals. As a member of Reach for Recovery, and working closely with the beloved Father Metaxas, Irene would give hope to patients, "look at me...you can be a survivor like me". She was also a 40-year member of the Greek Orthodox Church ladies Philoptochos Society, dedicating her time to helping others and her church. She also worked with others serving the Hellenic Nursing Home, singing and dancing for patients, along with sitting bedside with those who were bed ridden.
Above all else, Irene was a person of deep faith, who loved her church and valued forgiveness. She took great pride in her Greek culture and traditions and was always the first on the dance floor and the last to leave. Her beauty came from within through her caring ways, and she radiated her positivity in her presence. She considered Cape Cod her "paradise", along with her numerous friends there, and tried to leave her mark on the world with good deeds and always thinking of others.
Even though Irene loved plants and flowers, Irene asked that you make a donation to the Taxiarchae Archangels Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown, Massachusetts
