Christopher
November 17, 1922 – March 21, 2022
Irene Christopher of Newton, formerly of Watertown and Boston, passed away on March 21 at the age of 99. Born on the island of Kos when it was part of Italy, she was the beloved wife of the late Richard Coleman. She was the daughter of George and Helen (Stephanou)Christopher and came to this country as an infant. Irene was a graduate of Boston University and received a degree in Library Science from Simmons College.
Irene had a long and distinguished career as a librarian. She initially worked briefly in public libraries but the majority of her career was in academic libraries at Emerson College, Harvard University and 38 years at Boston University, retiring in 1992 as Chief Librarian at BU Medical Center. Irene was a strong advocate of libraries. Whenever one of her student assistants showed an interest in pursuing a library career she was quick to offer counsel and support. Irene was active in several library organizations. Aside from professional activities she enjoyed growing and tending to a collection of cactus and succulent plants. She played the piano for her personal enjoyment and attended music and theater events. She visited many countries in
her travels. Irene is survived by her brother Chris G. Christopher of Spotswood NJ, sisters Stella Papadakis of Wyomissing PA, and the late Mary Christopher of Watertown MA as well as many nieces and nephews. Donations in her memory may be made to the Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown MA or to Associates of the Boston Public Library, Boston MA, 300 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116.
