Obituary

Hope (Mourousas) Tsacoyeanes, 78, of Watertown, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2014, at her home, following a valiant battle with cancer. Mrs. Tsacoyeanes was the loving wife of the late James C. Tsacoyeanes, who died on October 20, 2013 after long enduring Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Mrs. Tsacoyeanes and her late husband shared a loving 53 year marriage and together they raised three daughters Leah Tsacoyeanes Price of Pataskala, OH; Andrea Tsacoyeanes Beaudry of Beverly, MA; and Stephanie Phillips of Plainville, MA. Their home was always filled with laughter and love. Mrs. Tsacoyeanes lived in the west side of Watertown her entire life. She attended Watertown Public Schools and graduated valedictorian of her class from Watertown High School (1954) before earning her Bachelor's degree from Harvard University/Radcliffe College (1958) in English Literature. Hope was a faithful and active parishioner of the Taxiarche Greek Orthodox Church of Watertown most of her life. She met her late husband James as teenagers when they sang in the choir together and were members of the Greek Orthodox Youth Association. Mrs. Tsacoyeanes and her late husband contributed their efforts over the years to the annual Bazaar, including serving as co-chairs, where Mrs. Tsacoyeanes was famous for her original, homemade baklava ice cream. Together they ran the children's games at the Bazaar, which Mr. Tsacoyeanes had built and painted himself. Mrs. Tsacoyeanes was also a member and past President of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, and served over the years on the Parish Council. She hosted and cooked meals for groups of parishioners and then donated the money raised to purchase children's liturgy books for the church. She also served on the Church's outreach and parish nursing ministries. Hope was very active in Watertown politics and the Watertown community throughout her life. She held memberships and appointments to many town and charitable boards including the League of Women Voters, Town Meeting Member, Blue Ribbon Economic Development Panel, Watertown Arsenal Re-use Study Committee, Member of the Board of Directors of the Watertown Boys and Girls Club, Corporator of the Watertown Savings Bank, and of the Mt. Auburn Hospital Foundation, among many other activities. Mrs. Tsacoyeanes also spent 9 successful years as the Executive Vice President of the Watertown Chamber of Commerce and was a former Vice President of the Massachusetts Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives. She also previously worked as Executive Assistant for the Watertown Redevelopment Authority. When her children were young, she spent many years as a member and officer of the PTA/PTO and dedicated much time and effort to improving the Watertown Public Schools. Hope was well known by all her friends and family as having incredible intellect, a competitive spirit, and a wonderful sense of humor and sharp wit. She had a passion for words and writing, and often used them over the years to roast and toast colleagues and town officials with her famous poems. She was a talented writer and was known to dash off many a stinging letter to the editor of the Watertown newspapers on many issues of concern over the years, in addition to authoring a column in the local newspaper. She loved to spend days cooking--whether it be for family, friends, or church functions. She was a talented cook and enjoyed making her authentic Greek delicacies and took pride in recreating meals she'd tasted elsewhere and improving upon their recipes. She was an avid reader and thoroughly enjoyed creative endeavors such as sewing, knitting, making crafts for her church sales, and spent many years working for her sister's gift basket business. In retirement Hope dedicated most of her leisure time to her church endeavors, and to being a beloved Yiayia to her 6 granddaughters, of whom she was incredibly proud. She spent countless days and nights traveling around eastern Massachusetts (and sometimes to Ohio) to cheer them on at their sporting events, concerts and plays. She loved enjoying days at the beach with her daughters and granddaughters, and playing spirited family board games (where winning always mattered). During her later years she also became a dedicated parishioner of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Lexington, where she was dearly loved and appreciated. There she found a new spiritual home, and brought her ideas and talents (and her homemade baklava ice cream) to help St. Nicholas' successful Greek Festivals. She was also an active parish councilor and member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. With her huge personality, Hope made a tremendous impact on all who knew and loved her; but she remained remarkably humble throughout her life. In addition to her three daughters Leah, Andrea and Stephanie and two sons-in-law, Andrew Beaudry and John Phillips, Mrs. Tsacoyeanes is survived by her 6 granddaughters Rebecca and Alison of Ohio, Erica and Sabrina of Beverly, and Alexandra and Sydney of Plainville, her sister Cynthia and brother-in-law William Mantzoukas of Nahant; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
