George Vergetis, 94, of Wellesley, MA, formerly of Brookline and Brighton, MA, passed away peacefully at home on March 18, 2023. Son of the late Demetrios and Ifigenia. Devoted husband of the late Anna (Christakis). Beloved father of James and his wife Pamela and daughter Effie Luzaitis and her husband Mark. Cherished papou to grandsons William, Alex and George Luzaitis. Brother of the late John and his wife Vasiliki, the late Theodore and his wife Maria, the late Haralambos and his wife Theodora, the late Dionisios and his wife Katerina, the late Vasiliki and her husband Kostas, and the late Maria. Brother-in-law to Peter and Francis Christakis, Lambrini and the late George Christakis, the late John and Demetra Christakis, Panagiota Velisari and her late husband Aleko, and the late Katerina and Panayotis Bennos. Lifelong friend to Costa and Katerina Sioras. Loving Theo to many nieces and nephews.
George was born in Spathari, Greece in 1928. He served in the Greek military before he met his beloved wife Anna. They moved their family to Montreal, Canada and then eventually landed in the United States in 1972. George was a long-time cook at the Busy Bee Restaurant in Brookline and was known as much for his delicious cooking as he was for his infectious smile and kind words. George thoroughly enjoyed his time in the garden and he left his mark with the numerous trees, plants and flowers that he cared for around his own home, and with the saplings that found homes and grew in the yards of many friends and relatives. Above all, George is best known for the constantlove he showed to his family and friends in both words and deeds. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.
The family invites you to join them for a funeral service on Thursday, March 23 r d at 11:00 AM, at the Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown Street, Weston, MA (781-237-5561). There is a viewing scheduled from 10:00 AM to 11:00AM prior to the service. Burial at Walnut Hills Cemetery, 96 Grove Street, Chestnut Hill, MA, immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in George's Memory may be made to Iconography Fund, Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown Street, Weston, MA 02493.
