Vastis
April 26, 1939 – December 2, 2023
George A. Vastis, of Barrington, Rhode Island formerly of Belmont, MA passed away on December 2, 2023. He was the son of the late Andrew George Vastis, and Vasiliki (Maheras) Vastis.
George is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years Panagiota (Vergakis) Vastis. Loving father of Valerie Vastis of Belmont, MA, Maria Saxionis and her husband Abraham of Ashland, MA, Joanne Boccelli and her husband Fred of Ashland, MA, and Andrea Vastis and her husband Kenneth Carlson of Seekonk MA. Loving Pappou of Andrew and Peter Saxionis, Nicholas, George and Dominic Boccelli, and Lily and Shuwei Carlson.
He is also survived by his brother-in-law Panagioti Vergakis and his wife Lisa, his sisters-in-law Matina Papadopoulos and Ann Vergakis. Pre-deceased by his brothers-in-law, George Vergakis and Sotiris Papadopoulos, godson Theodore Anagnos, and his best friend and Koumbaro, Nick Poulopoulos.
Also loved by many nieces, nephews, godchildren, relatives, and friends here and in Greece.
George was born in Karyes, Sparta, Greece and emigrated to the U.S. in 1951 with his parents and grandmother. He attended Boston Latin High School and worked at his grandfather's fruit store all through his youth. A self-made businessman, he worked for Lechmere Sales in Cambridge, MA entering as part time stock help, and leaving as a Merchandise Manager. He went onto Cleveland, Ohio, where he was a salesman for American Tourister Luggage, moving onto their headquarters in Warren, RI working his way up to Vice President of Sales, traveling throughout the world, especially in the Middle East. He rounded out his career as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Baltimore Luggage Company.
George was a huge proponent of education, not only for his four daughters, but also supporting his grandchildren's schooling. He enjoyed giving all his dose of wisdom from the "School of Hard Knocks," with phrases such as "nobody owes you anything," and "there's no such thing as a free lunch."
George was happiest when he was out in the woods hunting rabbits and in hosting his famous barbeques for family and friends.
Funeral Service on Friday, December 8, 2023 at 11AM at the Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Ave., Watertown, MA. Please go directly to church.
Visitation on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at the Faggas Funeral Home, 551 Mt. Auburn Street,Watertown, MA from 4PM to 8PM . ADDITIONAL OFF STREET PARKING LOCATED AT UNCOMMON GROUNDS, 575 MT. AUBURN STREET. PARKING ATTENDANTS WILL BE ON DUTY.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
