George P
Varsamis
June 10, 1929 – November 7, 2024
George P Varsamis lived his life to the fullest for almost a century. He was part of a group somecall the "Greatest Generation". As a survivor of WWII, a hardworking U.S. immigrant, a veteran of the Korean War, successful business owner, a loving husband, devoted father and
grandfather, and faithful Orthodox Christian, he indeed earned and was worthy of that
classification.
Born in 1929 in a small village in Greece called Vassara, George grew up knowing he was loved despite the absence of his father who lived and worked in the States to support the family. His was a simple life until it was shattered by WWII, the German occupation of Greece and the civil unrest that followed. He endured hardships and learned the meaning of fear at a young age. With the help of his family, George left the unrest in Greece and immigrated to the United States. Striving for a better life, he immediately began work at a local factory until he was drafted.
After serving his country in the Korean War, he met his first love and future wife Evyenia. Happily married and blessed with his daughter, Pamela, George settled in Belmont, MA. He concurrently joined this twin Fred and brother John with their cabinetry business. Together the three brothers forged Woodcraft Kitchens, a highly successful business located in Watertown. George's world was turned upside down when his beautiful wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite his care and efforts, Evyenia lost her battle with cancer at a very young age and he was devastated. George worked through his grief and dedicated his life to raising his daughter. He was a father and a mother to Pam and she was the light of his life.
Upon retirement, with Pamela grown and married to a wonderful man, George finally turned his attention to himself. He was blessed and fortunate to meet his second wife, Mary. With their shared life experiences and mutual love and support, he began his second phase of life. George enjoyed every member of his new blended family gaining another daughter, Kathy and son, Demetri. He later, with delight, welcomed his grandchildren Nia and Andrew along with Kostacky, Niko, DeDe, Anthony and Marenna. As a Papou, he was cherished. With his trademark
whistle, he imparted his love and wisdom in a way that was uniquely his own.
On a personal level, George was the epitome of optimism. Despite his share of hardships, he had a fun-loving, sunny disposition that was hard to miss. George spread joy wherever he went. Always ready with a smile, always ready for a family gathering or party, a lover of travel
and a good wine, an avid skier, photographer, a keeper of memories, a creative fixer-upper – he was a bundle of energy. More importantly, George's good soul, faith and love of people was evident to all. He will be sorely missed by his family, his many friends, the Taxiarchae church
parish, in addition to the AHEPA, American Legion and Vassara Society communities, among
others.
