George Moutafis passed away peacefully in the early morning of Sunday, November 2, 2014 at his home in Belmont MA with his wife of 56 years Joan (Mastorakis) Moutafis at his bedside. George was born on August 23, 1931 in Chios Greece. He was the first born to the late Yianni Moutafis and Katina (Hatzimbes) Moutafis. Life as a young boy was not easy as he endured the German occupation during World War II. When he was of age he served his time in the Greek army. After serving his time in the Army, George worked on several Merchant Marine vessels before immigrating to the United States in 1956. George settled in the Boston area. On a trip to visit cousins in Vandergrift PA, he met his wife to be Joan Mastorakis. George and Joan were married at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Vandergrift PA on April 20, 1958. George started a Dry Cleaning business (Andy's Cleaners) in Boston's South End. George ran his business for 40 years up to his retirement. In retirement George had the opportunity to return to his native Greece several times for vacations. George also enjoyed traveling to Florida and fishing in the waters of Buzzard's Bay, and tended to his vegetable garden. George was an active early steward of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Somerville MA where he was involved in building the church's Hellenic Community Center in the mid 1960's. George later became an active steward of the Taxiarchae/Archangels Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown MA. George is predeceased by his brother Stefanos Moutafis, his brother-in-law Costas Manekas, his brother-in-law George Mouhanos, and his son Alexander Moutafis. George is survived by his wife Joan (Mastorakis) Moutafis, his son John Moutafis and his wife Leslie (Storozuk) Moutafis of Longmeadow MA, his son Peter and his wife Tracy (Powell) Moutafis of Framingham MA, his son Michael Moutafis of Framingham MA, his granddaughter Alexandra Moutafis, and his grandsons George and Angelo Moutafis,. George is also survived by his brother Michael Moutafis and his wife Maria of Piraeus Greece, his sister Maria (Moutafis/Mouhanos) Manekas of Chios Greece, and his sister-in-law Ioanna Moutafis of Chios Greece along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Funeral on Wednesday November 5 from Faggas Funeral Home, 551 Mt. Auburn street Watertown MA at 10AM followed by funeral services at Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Ave. Watertown MA.
