George Alexander Karahalios Sunrise: 9/22/1931 - Sunset: 9/8/2015 On September 22, 1931, in Athens, Greece, Irene and Alexandros Karahalios welcomed their fourth son, George Alexander. George received his early and secondary education in Athens. Born with a thirst for knowledge, in 1953 at the age of 21 came to the United States to attend the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary in Brookline, MA. Father Karahalios, a consummate student, continued his education earning the following degrees: Th.D 1991, University of Athens, Greece; Ph.D 1971 University of Heidelberg, Germany; S.T.M. 1965, Boston University; B.A. 1958, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary, Brookline, MA. His Doctoral dissertations were on translations and interpretations of manuscripts by the Byzantine Philosopher of the eleventh century, Michael Psellus. His German dissertation was The Philosophical Trilogy of Michael Psellus, God-Cosmos-Man. His Greek dissertation, The Anthropology (on Man) of Michael Psellus, and which was published in 2008. Father Karahalios also translated an edition of the St. James Divine Liturgy; Gregory Palamas, To Akindynus-Treatise 1 and 2. Other publications include Alumni Lectures #3, Mysticism of Eleventh Century-Michael Psellus; Greek Theological Review, Man and his Beginnings-Michael Psellus. He taught philosophy at Hellenic College/Holy Cross, Brookline, MA, for over 25 years. He also served as Vice President and Provost of Hellenic College/Holy Cross. Another position he held was as the Chancellor of the Metropolis of Boston. While studying in Heidelberg, Germany, he served as the Auxiliary Chaplain for the United States Army for the Greek Orthodox military and civilian personnel. As an ordained priest he served parishes in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, including the Holy Trinity Church in Lowell. Under his leadership, churches were built in Laconia, New Hampshire, *Andover and Dracut, MA. He also bought and renovated a church in Concord, New Hampshire. *In 1971 Father Karahalios was assigned to Saints Constantine and Helen Church in Lawrence, MA. He launched a building campaign that saw the parish build a community center and burn its mortgage in 3 years. In 1984 he led the community as they voted to purchase land and move the parish to Andover. In 1988 Rev. Karahalios celebrated the farewell divine liturgy at this edifice, and on December 4, 1988 they held "Thyranxia-Opening Services" at the new SS Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Andover. The community grew rapidly and continues to thrive to this day. He retired from the parish in 1992. Rev. Dr. Karahalios' life's work was recently acknowledged in a new book published in Germany, Human Development in Sacred Landscapes, by Lutz Kaeppel/Vassiliki Pothou, honoring "his scholarly accomplishments and devoted service in the Greek Orthodox Church and the promotion of Greek Letters world-wide." Beloved husband of Presbytera Calypso (Arianoutsos) Karahalios. Brother of Panagiotis Karahalios and his wife Maria, Athanasios Karahalios and the late Evangelos Karahalios. Brother in law of Barbara Arianoutsos Aliprantis and Ioanna Karahalios. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral Service on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 at 11AM at The Holy Cross Chapel at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, 50 Goddard Ave., Brookline, MA. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015 at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 71 Chandler Rd, Andover, MA from 4 to 8pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Rev. Dr. George A. Karahalios Scholarship Fund, c/o Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, 50 Goddard Ave., Brookline, Mass or to Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Andover, MA. Burial in Gardens at Gethsemane Cemetery, West Roxbury, MA
