REVEREND DR. GEORGE P. KALANGIS Rev. Dr. George P. Kalangis passed away on July 15, 2009, at the age of 74 at Calvary Hospital in New York after a brave and valiant 7 year battle with cancer. Fr. George was a Greek Orthodox Priest for 48 years. Rev. Dr. George P. Kalangis is survived by his wife of 48 years, Presbytera Helen of NY, the former Helen Limperopoulos (Liberis) of Roslindale, MA, his son Peter and his wife Cynthia of NY, his three daughters, Denise Kalangis Freeman and her husband Daryl and their daughters Krissy & Amy of FL, Demetra Kalangis and her son Sotiris and Crystal Kalangis of NY, his three sisters Maria Kapsaskis and her husband Spyros of Jamaica Plain, Athanasia Papadakis of Roslindale, Anna Giannopoulos and her husband Peter of Arlington, his brother Dr. Constantine Kalantzis and his wife Effe of Quincy, brother-in-law, Fr. Nicholas Limperopoulos and his wife Presbytera Georgia of CA, and his mother-in-law, the former Mrs. Thedusa Limperopoulos, now known as Ioanna Monahe, of Roslindale. Born in Georgitsion, Sparta, Greece on May 16th, 1935, Fr. George graduated the Corinth Theological Seminary in Corinth, Greece with a Bachelor of Theology in 1956. Later in 1956 he immigrated to the United States, where he continued his Theological studies earning an A.B. from the Hellenic College, Holy Cross Theological School in Brookline, MA in June 1960. He was ordained a Deacon on November 27th, 1960 and to the Priesthood March 26th, 1961, by His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos and served as assistant Dean at the Boston Greek Cathedral until June 1963. In the summer of 1963, he was appointed by Archbishop Iakovos as Priest-Organizer of the newly established Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Community in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Following a one year ministry in Florida, Fr. George was transferred in 1964 to the Saints Anargyroi Church in Marlboro, MA. In conjunction with his pastoral duties in Marlboro, Fr. George also completed his comprehensive examination and composed his thesis for his Masters of Sacred Theology degree in the field of Social Psychology. In June 1964, Fr. George was awarded the S.T.M. degree from the Andover Newton Theological School in Newton, MA. In June 1965, Fr George was admitted by the University of Rhode Island to continue graduate studies in Library Science, where he received his M.L.S. in June 1966. In September 1965, Fr. George was appointed as Librarian at the Marlboro High School. In September 1966 he accepted the position of assistant Librarian at the Assumption College in Worcester, MA, becoming the first Greek Orthodox priest to hold a position in a Roman Catholic College since the schism of the Eastern and Western church in 1054 A.D. In September 1967, Brandeis University in Waltham, MA offered Fr. George the Gifts & Exchange Librarian Position. In 1970, Fr. George welcomed Archbishop Iakovos to Saints Anagyroi, marking the community's first visit by a North America Primate since the community was founded in 1925. In 1971, Fr. George was transferred to the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth, NH. In conjunction with his transfer, Fr. George was appointed Assistant Librarian and Associate Professor in Psychology at the New Hampshire Technical Institute. Meanwhile, Fr. George opened new horizons in his academic pursuits by being accepted to Boston University to complete graduate studies in Counselor Education. In 1972, Fr. George attained his residence and graduate degree requirements and received the C.A.G.S (Certificate of Advance Graduate Studies) from the Boston University, School of Education. In September 1973, Fr. George was accepted to the School of Theology of the University of Thessaloniki, Greece, to pursue doctoral studies in Cross-Cultural Education Systems. In 1976, Fr. George was awarded a HEW Fellowship to pursue Ph. D. studies in Bilingual/Bicultural Education at The Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. During his tenure in Tallahassee, Fr. George served the Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Community. During the academic year of 1977, Fr. George received a Doctoral Dissertation award from the Rockefeller Foundation to write his thesis, entitled, "The Socio-cultural and Religious Ethos of the Greek Parochial Schools in the American South." In that same year, he was appointed Director of the Multilingual/Multicultural Learning Resource Center, College of Education at FSU. In June 1979, Fr. George received his Doctor of Philosophy from FSU, was assigned to the Saints. Markella and Demetrios Greek Community in Fort Walton Beach, FL, became the Learning Resources Director at Okaloosa-Walton Junior College in Niceville, FL and was appointed Chairman of the Commission of Greek Studies and Culture in the American South by His Grace Bishop John of Charlotte, NC. In 1983, Fr. George was recalled to the Greater New York Metropolitan area serving the Transfiguration of Christ Church in Corona, Zoodohos Peghe Community in the Bronx, Panagia of Island Park and the Community of Saint Markella of Wantaugh, NY. Coupled with his pastoral duties, Fr. George was also appointed by New York Governor Mario Cuomo to the New York City's Psychiatric Centers and a leadership position at the Creedmore Psychiatric Center until his retirement in 2008.
