Obituary



George Demetrios Coupounas, 77, of Chestnut Hill, MA, Attorney at Law and Certified Public Accountant, a specialist in tax law and estate planning, died of pancreatic cancer on July 5, 2007. He was the husband of Angelyn Konugres Coupounas, the father of Demetrios George Coombs Coupounas and his wife Kimberly of Boulder Colorado, uncle of Demetra Sorenson Christopher of Connecticut and numerous other nieces and nephews. A sister, Stavroula Sorensen, predeceased him. He was born in Albany, NY, the son of the late Demetrios George and Sophia G. Coupounas and grew up in Scotia, NY.

He was an honors graduate, Magna Cum Laude, Syracuse University, BA and MBA, a graduate of Harvard Law School, JD and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Gold Key Honor Society.

He was a former Director of the World Affairs Council of Boston, a member of the Board of Trustees of Nichols College (treasurer), Fellow of The President\x92s Council, Syracuse University, and President of the New England Chapter of The American Association of Attorney-Certified Public Accounts. He was a member of the National Council for Harvard Medicine, The Advisory Council for Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, Harvard Medical School. A long time Republican, he was a member of The Senatorial Inner Circle under President Reagan. In later years he was active in the outdoor industry as a co-founder with his son and daughter-in-law of GoLite, and outdoor gear company.

He was a devoted lay member of the Greek Orthodox Church and related Church organizations: National President Orthodox Christian Laity, President of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England, Member of the New England Diocese Council and a member of the executive committee of Greek Orthodox American Leaders.

A brilliant, soft-spoken man with a dry wit and infectious curiosity for all things, especially business, Mr. Coupounas was beloved by family, friends and business associates. He will be greatly missed.
