George William Carras, 85, of West Yarmouth, MA passed away on June 20, 2024. George was born in Boston in 1938 and was the second of four children for James Peter Carras (nee Karathanasis) and his wife Maria (nee Hondrobilas). George is survived by his loving son, James Carras (Carolyn) of Bartlett, IL; and his loving daughter, Elaine Menice of Hull, MA. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Michael. He is also survived by his brother, Father Panagiotes Carras (Presvytera Roberta) of Toronto, Ontario; his sister, Athena Karloutsos (James) of Jamaica Plain, MA; and his brother, James Carras (Alicia) of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He was a cherished Papou to his seven grandchildren, Alyssa, Alex, Matthew, Drew, Emmy, Callie, and Peter. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Born during the Depression, George grew up with his family living in the projects in Boston. His family's situation was worsened at the sudden death of his father in 1948, but continued his schooling and utilizing ROTC, he graduated from Northeastern University.
In 1962, he married Hope Irene Carras (Moschi) and served in the US Army. George worked as an industrial engineer and was a consultant for the Massachusetts Hospital Association.
He later moved to Illinois, where he became Vice President of the Illinois Hospital Association for over 12 years. Following his retirement in 1990, George settled in his paradise of West Yarmouth, MA and embarked on his favorite career as teacher of English as a second language.
Funeral Service on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 10:30AM at the Taxiarchae Greek Church, 25 Bigelow Ave., Watertown, MA. Visitation prior to the Service from 9:30AM to 10:30AM at the church. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the above named church. Burial in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Watertown, MA.
