Obituary

Flora (Halioulia) Kondylis, 85, of Watertown Massachusetts passed away on November 14, 2016.Flora was born in the northern part of Greece in the city of Thessaloniki on August 6, 1931. Flora's family relocated to Athens and she entered private school where she learned English. She also enrolled in extracurricular language schools, the Alliance Francaise and the Goethe Institute. Flora was admitted to the Athens School of Law upon graduation of high school. After two years, she discontinued her studies and instead took a position as an administrative assistant to the Prime Minister of Greece. While working there, she met Nikolaos Kondylis and they married in 1958. Due to a combination of professional, political and personal circumstances the couple, decided to leave Greece with their two young children, George and Kitsa. Nikos applied and won a scholarship for a doctorate in the School of Engineering at Syracuse University and the family moved to the United States in 1966 on a student visa. They lived in former Army barracks which were retrofitted for International Student Housing. There they made lifelong friendships with fellow students from all over the world, including Latin America, Africa and Asia. During this time Flora remained an avid reader and traded babysitting favors with neighbors in order to take night courses at Syracuse University. Upon completion of his graduate studies, Nikos, now "Nick" was offered a teaching position and the family moved to Boston. Flora was able to resume her studies at Harvard Extension School while raising the children. Often the couple would host international students for dinners and would take them to explore the sites around the New England area. These students were exposed to Thanksgiving dinners in which they had a combination of turkey and the traditional American fare with additional sides of moussaka, tzatziki and other Greek specialties. Flora firmly believed this was an accurate depiction of American culture. Since Flora demonstrated proficiency in 5 modern languages, she was occasionally called as a translator for the Immigration Court of Boston. She took the transgressions of Greek immigrants almost personally. The couple often sparred over philosophy, politics, language and history and they hosted parties where Flora loved to lead traditional Greek dances. Once the children were in high school, Flora continued her studies and worked in the Modern Greek Section of the Weidner Library of Harvard University. At Weidner she made new and close friendships in her ideal environment-- surrounded by books and book lovers. At the same time, she tutored Modern and Ancient Greek for Hellenophiles as well as Archeology professors. In 1986 after years of coursework, Flora, at the age of 55, was awarded her Bachelors of Arts Summa Cum Laude from Harvard Extension School. The focus of her studies was in Linguistics, where in addition to a solid foundation in Latin and Ancient Greek she acquired a working knowledge of Sanskrit. She began Masters level studies there and continue to pursue Sanskrit. Due to Nick's failing health, she discontinued these studies and closely supported him, acting as his primary caregiver. Once Nick passed away, Flora's moved to the Tidd Home in Woburn MA. Flora will be best remembered for her keen intellect and wit, her loyalty to friends and her love of learning, travel and good conversation. . Beloved wife of the late Dr. Nikolaos G. Kondylis.
