Ethel (Fillios) Caragianes Caragianes, Ethel: Age 86, a longtime resident of Cambridge, Massachusetts, passed away on January 27, 2012. Ethel was the beloved wife of the late James "Jimmy" Caragianes also of Cambridge. She is survived by her three children William "Bill"Caragianes and his wife Valerie (Seidel) of Old Orchard Beach, Pamela Christodoulo and her husband George of Belmont, and Charles "Chuck" Caragianes and his wife Paulette (Renault) of Lowell. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren better known as her "chickens:" James "Brad" Caragianes, Clay Caragianes, Peter Christodoulo and his wife Amy, Thayer Meicler (Christodoulo) and her husband Philip, Andrew Renault-Caragianes, Jeanette Renault-Caragianes and Charlette Renault-Caragianes. Ethel was also delighted by the recent arrival of her first great-grand daughter Daphne. Ethel was a proud honors graduate of Cambridge High and Latin in 1943, and Burdett College. Ethel and her husband Jim were longtime anchors of the Cambridgeport neighborhood well known as the owners and operators of the Pearl Food Market. As neighborhood activists Ethel and Jim formed a dynamic team helping to fight and defeat the "Innerbelt" highway proposal that would have destroyed the neighborhood in the late 1960s, and then became deeply immersed in city, state and national politics culminating in a personal visit to the White House in 1979 and meeting with President Carter. Ethel was a devoted member of the Saints Constantine and Helen Church Greek Orthodox Church where her father and mother Constantinos Fillios and Pagona (Kefalas) Fillios laid the cornerstone. In her later years Ethel was a volunteer at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge helping in the gift shop where her business skills were once again in demand, and enjoyed painting in watercolor.
