Ernest Nicholas Kinas of Newton, MA was born November 28,1930 in Boston, MA, and passed away on April 8, 2020. He was the son of the late Nicholas A. and Evangelia (Psaradakis) Kinas who had emigrated from Ano Archanes, Crete in Greece. Ernest was the beloved husband of Nelly (Christopher) Kinas, loving father of Ernest S. Kinas and Carol Ann Kinas Stathas and her husband George, and cherished grandfather of Ava Gail and Nicholas George Stathas. He was the uncle of Nickolas A. Kinas and his wife Louiza, and great-uncle of Eleni and Denise Kinas. He was predeceased by his siblings Arthur N. Kinas, Mary A. Pappastathis, Christopher N. Kinas and infant George Kinas. He is also survived by dear relatives and friends.
Ernest was raised in Brighton, MA. His strong work ethic developed at a very early age, growing up during the Great Depression and World War II. These historic events shaped his determination to overcome challenges during times of adversity, and instilled in him the importance of being self-reliant, prepared, and loyal to his family and country. As a young boy he worked hard, diligently shining shoes in Brighton Center and earning enough money to buy his first bicycle. He attended Brighton High School and graduated in 1948. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1953, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He then completed post-graduate engineering programs at Northeastern University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Ernest began his engineering career at Sylvania Electric in Seneca Falls, NY and International Telephone and Telegraph in NJ, before returning to Boston to work at the U.S. Airforce Research Center in civil service. He then worked for 38 years at the U.S. Army Research Laboratories in Watertown, MA as a Senior Mechanical Engineer in the Prototype Development Division, Metals and Ceramics. He had been active in metals research and development, specializing in process development and prototype processing. He was also actively engaged in engineering investigation programs in high density kinetic energy armor piercing penetrator materials, atomic shell munitions, prototype ceramic forging dies, and prototype high strength metal-plastic laminates. He served as a forging consultant to other Army organizations and represented the Army in Government committees and conferences on forging. He was a registered Professional Engineer and a member of American Society for Metals, the Project Management Institute, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also held patents and was published in many technical journals.
Ernest was devoted to his family, his church, and proud of his Boston-based roots and Greek-American heritage. He was a long-standing member of the AHEPA organization. He was an avid reader, and had a life-long love for learning, history, art, collectibles, and real estate investing. In his retirement, he continued his educational enrichment at Harvard University at the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement (HILR), completing courses ranging from politics to comedy.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Ave., Watertown, MA 02472. As a result of the ongoing health crisis in the world and with genuine concern for the people whom they love, private funeral services and burial will be held on Monday, April 13, 2020 at 10AM. Family and friends who wish to view the funeral via live stream may go to goarchangels.org and the Password is Kinas promptly at 10AM.
