Erasmia "Mia" H. Calivas's Obituary

Erasmia (Mia) Calivas, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Her kindhearted spirit touched all who knew her, leaving a lasting impression of warmth, compassion, and love.

Mia was born on June 16, 1936, in New York City to the late John and Georgia Spiridakis, whose family roots trace back to Crete, Greece. She grew up in Washington Heights and later moved with her family to Sunnyside, Queens, as a teenager. Mia shared a deep and loving bond with her younger brothers whom she cherished deeply.

Her life was deeply rooted in the Greek Orthodox Church, where she found a strong sense of community, enduring friendships, and a deepening of her faith. These connections and values would guide Mia throughout her life as she nurtured her own family.

Mia met her childhood sweetheart and future husband, Alkiviadis Calivas, in Sunday school. They were married in 1956 and shared nearly 70 years together, creating a home filled with love and warmth. Soon after their wedding, her husband was ordained to the priesthood and they served in two parishes in New York for twenty years, as they raised their three children. Their journey took them to Thessaloniki, Greece for two years, becoming a memorable life experience.  In 1978, they moved to the Boston area and settled in Needham after her husband was appointed to the faculty of Holy Cross School of Theology. There they made their home for the next 46 years.  Mia had a gift for hospitality and cooking, creating a welcoming environment for all who entered their home.

Mia also brought her warmth and dedication to her professional life.  After moving to Needham, Mia assumed the role of manager at the Holy Cross bookstore, where she was a caring and supportive presence to the students.  Later she served as Administrative Assistant to the Director of Libraries at Simmons College for 16 years. Mia treasured her tenure at Simmons and most especially, the friendships she formed there.  During her retirement, Mia explored her love for creativity through jewelry making, sharing her beautiful bracelets with family and friends.

Mia's eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren were the light of her life.  Yiayia Mia was a constant and adoring presence in her grandchildren's lives, always taking pride in their accomplishments and milestones.

Mia's legacy of kindness, faith, and devotion to family will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.

Mia is the beloved wife of Rev. Fr. Alkiviadis C. Calivas. Devoted mother of Kathryn Chininis and her husband Rev. Fr. Tom Chininis, Dean Calivas and his wife Evangeline, and Olga Calivas.
