Elaine Gomatos Bucuvalas, 97, of Watertown Massachusetts died peacefully on May 13 2016. She was born on January 5, 1919 in Cambridge Massachusetts, the oldest daughter of John and Agnes Gomatos. She was married to Constantine M. Bucuvalas, and together they were prominent members of the Boston area Greek-American and Greek Orthodox community. In her early adult life, she was an accomplished professional woman, having earned a B.A from Calvin Coolidge College and M.S.W. from Boston College. For years, she worked as a medical social worker at what became Brigham and Women's Hospital. In her middle years, she was a beloved wife, parent and homemaker. After the passing of her husband in 1988, she returned to the workforce and service to the Greek-American community, working in the Department of Religious Education at Hellenic College/Holy Cross. She retired in 2009, at age 90. To younger generations of women, she was an inspiration providing gentle positive encouragement, and earned their love and admiration. Throughout her life, she stayed tightly bound to her children, grandchildren, siblings, cousins, and extended family. She is survived by her sister Poppy Stamatos; her children Zoe McFarland, John C. Bucuvalas, and Steven P. C. Bucuvalas; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday May 20, Taxiarchae Greek Orthodox Church at 25 Bigelow St, Watertown Massachusetts. There will an hour visitation beginning at 10:00 AM followed by the service. Memorial donations may be sent to The Gomatos Reading Room Fund at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia or to the Archbishop Iakovos Library Fund at Hellenic College in Brookline, Mass.
