Obituary

Donald J. Matsas of Hingham, formerly of Wayland, Mass. died peacefully, Sept. 5, 2014 at home with his family after a short illness. Born in Somerville, Mass. on Aug. 2, 1925. He graduated from Somerville High in 1944 and from Capital Radio Institute for Engineering in 1949 (Washington, D.C) He served in the Navy during WW11 and in the Korean War as a radio operator. Donald was married for 54 years to Pauline who passed away in 2007. For the last few years of their marriage, our dad, tirelessly and lovingly, helped to keep our mom safe and healthy. He was given the name " Nurse Donald" for his 24/7 care. Our dad truly loved his organic food and organic farming in particular. Many referred to him as "health nut Don". As kids in the 1960's we thought we were having hamburgers for breakfast but really they were whole wheat pancakes. And his idea of giving us a treat was going to a health food store and buying us vitamin c wafers! His professional career was working in the electronics and electrical engineering disciplines. He was very proud of his work and his ability to solve technical problems. This also carried through to his personal life where he was always thinking of ways to improve his life and the lives of others. Our father was very proud of his Greek heritage and volunteered countless hours as a board member for the Greek Orthodox Church of Taxiarchae of Watertown. Donald leaves behind, a brother Peter Matsas of Storrs Mansfield, Conn. , Sister Dorothy Zevitas of Arlington, Ma. , 3 children, Paul Matsas of Mashpee, Mass., Donna Matsas Duffy and her husband, Marty of Waterboro, ME., Brian Matsas and his wife Sophia of Belmont, MA., and his grandchildren, Elizabeth and Nick Matsas and Kyle and Hannah Duffy, and great grandaughter, Laci. and many neices and nephews.
