Born on February 11, 1923, to Anna Nikolaidou and Stavros Iatridis, Demetrius grew up in Athens, Greece. He was profoundly influenced by the Great Depression, the invasion by Nazi Germany of Europe and Greece, and his experience of joining the Royal Hellenic Air Force and fighting with the British Army in the Middle East during World War II. He came to the USA after the war and was determined to devote his studies and career life to "helping the disadvantaged, the poor, and to building a better system of community that protects those who need help." He earned his Bachelors in Philosophy from Washington and Jefferson College and his Masters in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh, where he met the love of his life, Mary Xerocostas. In 1954, they married and moved to Philadelphia where he earned his Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College while working as a social worker in poor communities and teaching at Bryn Mawr. Soon thereafter, they returned to Greece where he worked with an international social and city planning firm in Athens and traveled throughout the world. The family returned to the USA in 1967 and settled in Newton. Demetrius joined the faculty at Boston College, teaching social policy and social welfare at the School of Social Work for 46 years. He was widely acknowledged internationally as an esteemed researcher and teacher, authored many books in social policy, and taught world-wide. For 50 years, Demetrius and his wife spent their summers on their beloved island of Sifnos, Greece.
