Demetra Morakis's Obituary

Demetra (Stavrinos) Morakis, 92, of Framingham and Waltham MA, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.

Demetra, known by many as Debbie, was born in Somerville, MA on May 13, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Theophilos and Asemo (Davos) Stavrinos and sister to Venetia Mitropoulos, Lydia Stavrinos and the late Mary Francoeur, John Stavrinos, Sandra Flynn and George Stavrinos.

Debbie was a graduate of Somerville High School. She was the beloved wife of the late John Anthony Morakis. Debbie and John were married on June 2, 1957 and enjoyed an incredible 64 years of marriage. She was a devoted mother to her three children, Katina, Anthony and Cynthia. She and John began their life together in Newton, MA followed by international assignments in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, Brazil from 1967 to 1984. Upon returning home, John and Debbie embarked on a small business opportunity establishing John Anthony's Gift shop in Concord, MA.

Debbie was known to embody humble service to those less fortunate throughout her life. During their time in Brazil, Debbie was actively involved in many charitable organizations, including serving as President of the Women's Club in Rio de Janeiro. Back in the US, she also continued her charitable work most notably through organizing quilt campaigns for children living with AIDS. Her selflessness was seen at home by treating many to her favorite Greek and Brazilian dishes throughout her life. You always had a seat at Debbie's table.

Debbie was a lifelong practicing member of the Greek Orthodox faith at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Weston, MA.  She was an active member of the church, contributing unselfishly over the years to the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society and serving as a past President. But more than anything, Debbie, and John, were known for making the Christmas holiday magical at St. D's, where they greeted generations of children as Santa and Mrs. Clause and put up a Dicken's Village display every year.

Debbie's greatest pride was her loving family. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Katina and Bob Wolfe of Boston MA; a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Karen Morakis of Hilton Head Island SC; a daughter, Cynthia Morakis Pursely and Peter Pursley Jr (deceased) of Dallas TX. She was a loving yiayia to eight grandchildren: John (Sarah) Morakis, Sarah (Tom Regan) Wolfe, Alex (Jessica) Wolfe, Samantha (Brennan) Weaver, Nicole Wolfe, Peter Pursely III, Kimberly (Brandon) Storey and Demetra "Demi" Pursely, and "big yiayia" to three great grandchildren: Jackson Morakis, Miles Morakis and Sophie Weaver.    Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown St Weston, MA. A Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the church immediately prior to the funeral service.  Burial services will be private.
