Christina Giannopoulos's Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Christina Giannopoulos, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the heart of her family—the mother of five children, grandmother of thirteen, and great-grandmother of nine. A pillar of strength, she embodied hard work, independence, and a warmth that made everyone feel welcome in her home.

Christina was born on April 14, 1934, in Dara, Greece, the daughter of Maria and Konstantinos Kahiouteas. She married her late husband Demetrios Giannopoulos in 1955 and had five children: Sofia, Milia, Maria, Dina, and Kostas. In 1974, determined to build a better life for her family than rural Greece could offer, she made the decision to move to the United States.

After arriving in the States, she worked tirelessly—often as the sole provider—saving until she could purchase the house on Gardner Street. That home became the family's gathering place, especially on Sundays, all the way through the last Sunday of her life. Its doors were always open. Family and friends filled the house constantly and countless Thanksgivings, Christmases, New Year's, and Easter Sundays were celebrated there. On any given day, anyone who stopped by was greeted with whatever Greek dish she had just cooked, possibly a piece of kremithopita, and best of all, a cup of Greek coffee followed by a complimentary coffee-reading to tell you your future.

Christina was sharp, intelligent, and blessed with a remarkable memory. She told vivid stories of life in her village, keeping generations of loved ones alive through the memories she shared. She loved where she came from and returned to her village every summer for many years after retiring. When she could no longer make the trip, she tended to her garden—planting everything from corn stalks and tomato vines to rows of herbs, and even a peach tree.

Above all, Christina was kind. She had a calming presence and was always ready to help anyone who asked. Her loved ones will remember her sitting at her kitchen table on Gardner Street, sharing stories only she could tell over a cup of Greek coffee.

Christina is survived by her five children: Sofia Kipriotakis, Milia Koukakis, Maria Paicopoulos and her husband John, Dina Kipreos and her husband Argirios, and Kostas Giannopoulos and his wife Julia. She also leaves behind eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, and was predeceased by two grandchildren, Alexandros Kipreos and Demetrios Koukakis. She was the sister of Fotini Milonakis and her husband Dimitrios, the late Stelios Kahiouteas, and the late Katerina Dimacopoulos, and the sister-in-law of Christina Kahiouteas and Andreas Dimacopoulos. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Christina's funeral will be held on Saturday, November 22, at St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church in Roslindale, MA at 10AM.  Visitation prior to the Service from 9AM to 10AM at the church. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
