Chuck (Charles or Charlie) was a proud man with a big personality, a remarkable sense of humor, and a zest for life. He was a people person who enjoyed talking with everyone he encountered whether it be in an elevator or in a restaurant and always made people feel comfortable around him. A person with genuine kindness and integrity, people gravitated to him as he took a personal interest in people of all ages. With his vast knowledge of so many topics, he was always eager to engage in conversation to learn from others and share his perspectives.
From his earliest years, Chuck was surrounded by friends who enjoyed his warmth, his outgoing personality and his positive views on life. He was a true friend to many and was especially devoted to his family, who all looked up to him for his good sense and counsel. He loved children and would quickly engage them in his humorous, playful interactions and had a special fondness for animals and nature. A truly spiritual and empathetic person, Chuck was generous in supporting those with challenging circumstances throughout his life.
Chuck found strength in the Greek Orthodox religion and was very engaged with Greek culture and the Greek language. As he lived in Greece for a few years, he gravitated to his roots and pursued his Greek heritage with enthusiasm.
Full of information from his wide reading and attention to the world around him, Chuck was extremely intelligent, finding real enjoyment in inquiry. He made it his goal to develop extensive knowledge about an amazing range of content including politics, history, sports, economics, government, science and the arts. With a love of all kinds of music from rock to jazz to opera to soul to classical, he was impressive with his detailed knowledge of elements of music such as the specific movements in classical pieces by a range of artists. He could sure burn up the dance floor with his remarkable rhythm and impressive moves.
Above all Chuck was an avid sports enthusiast – spring training for the Red Sox was an annual highlight for him as he looked forward to traveling to Tampa every year. He followed baseball, football, hockey and golf with great interest, but the Red Sox were his true passion and going to the World Series was a high point for him. As a loyal Boston fan, he loved the Bruins and the Celtics and the Patriots but also found much pleasure in college and professional teams.
Chuck met his increasing medical burdens with a combination of grace and stoicism. He was a fighter- he fought fiercely for as long as he could, and when he could fight no longer, he chose the terms of his surrender bravely and with dignity. He will be missed in this world by all who knew him.
Charles was the beloved son of the late Peter Charles and Catherine A. (Halachis) Fountas. Devoted brother of Irene Fountas, Paul Peter Fountas, and the late John Peter Fountas, the late Linda Fountas, and the late Nicoletta Fountas. Uncle of Natalie Fountas-Davis. Also survived by many relatives and friends. Funeral Service on Monday, Nov. 15, 2021 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England, 514 Parker St., Boston, MA at 10AM. Auburn St., Watertown, MA. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
