Bessie Giacoumakis's Obituary

Bessie (Demakis) Giacoumakis, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, at the age of 87. A longtime resident of Lynnfield, Massachusetts, Bessie was known for her unwavering kindness, deep faith, and the warmth she brought to everyone around her.

Born on February 20, 1938, in Cambridge, MA, Bessie grew up in Watertown, MA, the daughter of Michael and Eva Demakis. She was one of six sisters in a close-knit Greek-American family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband John N. Giacoumakis. She is predeceased by her sisters Irene, Mary, and Hope, and is survived by her beloved sisters Helen Leffas of San Diego, CA, and Joanne Latzanakis of Burlington, MA. Bessie is also remembered with love by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bessie met the love of her life, John N. Giacoumakis, while visiting Greece. Together, they built a beautiful life, raising their sons Stanley and Nicholas with devotion and pride. She was a cherished mother-in-law to Tamie, and a former mother-in-law to Laura Maillet. She was a proud grandmother to Vanessa, Sarah, and Nicholas Jr., and a doting great-grandmother to Aria. Bessie was also dearly loved by her five step-grandchildren and her step great-grandchild Gabriel, who brought her much joy and affection.

In 1969, Bessie and her family settled in Lynnfield, where she remained for the rest of her life. While raising her children, she worked at Star Market in Saugus and became a familiar, friendly face to many in the community.

Bessie had a deep-rooted Greek Orthodox faith that guided her life with strength and grace. She found joy in simple pleasures—traveling, dancing, and above all, cooking. Her dolmades were legendary, and her delicious meals were the centerpiece of every family gathering, especially during the holidays.

Known for her radiant smile, generous heart, and ability to connect with anyone she met, Bessie was a true matriarch and friend to many. Her legacy of love, laughter, and hospitality will live on through all who were blessed to know her.

She will be deeply missed.
